| Very Confused with the Microchip Stuff?? OK Bailey is going for his last set of shots and I called earlier today and see could they do the microchip while we was there but they told me again that he had to be sedated when I had went for the second set of shots the Dr. had told me when I go to get him fix they could do it all in one setting......but after reading post about Microchipping most people said that no sedatives where needed. So I was told by the receptionist AND the Dr. that they have to be sedated I asked why today and she said because its very painful and its a big needle this is a Animal Hospital and they have been in business for along time but have anyone else heard this about microchippng??

| All my birds and my puppy were chipped and none needed sedation. As a nurse the meds used to sedate have a far more damaging potential than a quick poke of a needle. |

Yorkie Lover Donating Member | Both our girls were done without sedation....and yes the needle was larger than I expeted.....but one the stick was done it was over and no recovery time was needed. We paid too much for ours......so check with your local spca and shelters and low cost clinics....because we have found the price varies greatly!!! If you pup is due for surgery for teeth cleaning or spay/neuter.....then that is a great time to have it done....but I would not sedate my girls just to microchip them.

Phantom Queen Morrigan Donating Member | sedation isn't needed when microchipping. if you want to get it done before you spay/neuter your dog then just tell the vet. I had morgan's done when she was spayed just because it is a big needle and i wasn't in a rush to get it done. since she was already sleeping it was just easier to get it done then.

| The microchip is put into the skin at the shoulders by a 18 gage needle. When i wanted to do my yorky my vet said the same thing about sedation, but I wasn't prepared to sedate her just for the microchip. Most animals take it like troopers. Vets make these suggestions because of the perception of what owners expect to keep their pets comfortable. If your yorky is due to be spayed or neutered soon maybe you can wait till then, if you want it done now then talk to your vet openly.

| I have had all 4 of mine chipped while they were under for their spay and neutering. I (just my opinion) wouldn't do it any other way. that is a darn big needle to poke them with while they are awake.

| Ok I talked to my Vet today when I bought Bailey get his last shots and he told me that the needle is indeed HUGE and it would be soooo uncomfortable and painful also with Bailey being the size he is (not even 3lbs). So instead of putting him under twice I will just get it done when he gets fixed He also said on the larger dogs its ok but Bailey size he would have to be sedated, me and my vet talked a good little while about this as I was very concerned.....but thanks everyone for your imput. I really appreciated it

its a 10 gage needle actually. 18 gague is the size of a regular ear piercing which isn't big at all. 10 gauge is the size of a grain of rice. i should know, i have an 8 gauge in my ear lobe hehehe its enough to see clear thru to the other side

| they don't need to be sedated unless they are hard to handle like fighting swuirming or trying to bite the microchip is no bigger than a grain of rice it goes between the shoulder blades i'm sure it doesn't feel good but it shouldn't be bad enough to have to put them under!

| They DO NOT NEED TO BE SEDATED! I have 2 dogs both micro-chipped, it is required in Hawaii, neither were sedated. Yes it is a big needle , 14 gauge I believe, but it is done subcutaneous and neither of my dogs even let out a cry, just sat there..good luck |

| Oops Kellie you are so right. Sorry wasn't thinking I guess. It is bigger than a 18 gage. Could be either 12 or 10 gage. Either way it is big.

| All of mine were done... All of my doggies were microchipped and none cried! :-) They all did very well. It was done fast and well and over before they knew it. All of them were awake and knew what was going on and they were all babies when it was done. (well young...12-14 weeks old) they didn't seem to mind it at all. The vet said it was all about where and how they did it. My babies did so well...lol. They are tough little guys and girls...lol. I have had many little ones done through the years and even had my family members doggies done. None ever cried. So I guess it depends on who does it...lol. I think they used to tell you it was better to do it during surgeries but my vet says she does it fast and easy and safe and so far I have no issues so I will continue having it done this way.
