The microchip is put into the skin at the shoulders by a 18 gage needle. When i wanted to do my yorky my vet said the same thing about sedation, but I wasn't prepared to sedate her just for the microchip. Most animals take it like troopers. Vets make these suggestions because of the perception of what owners expect to keep their pets comfortable. If your yorky is due to be spayed or neutered soon maybe you can wait till then, if you want it done now then talk to your vet openly.
