Hawk Problem - I Need Advice

We have tons of hawks, crows, owls, etc here. Early fall, we watched two babies learn to fly. We haven't seen them since.

We were told by a game warden a few years ago (one of our neighbors - we live out in the woods, so we really don't have a real neighbor - but he had pit bulls and a big wild cat killed all of his Pit Bulls, not at the same time)...anyway the game warden said that you could only kill something if you seen it attacking your animal or livestock, etc. That is crap because if you see it, it is too late! --well I think anyway!

Just like w/ rattlesnakes......we are bordered by national forsest and have been told that the park trades our local deer to somewhere in TX for rattlesnakes (as if we need more). They said that we aren't suppose to kill them because they are protected.......BUT.............I have risked fines and jail time because I don't want little Mojo to became a rattlesnakes meal!!!

I am all for animal rights, but I think your pets safety needs to come first!

Good luck w/ the hawks! I know they are good for keeping the rodents down and even snakes, but when times get hard, they will become a threat....well, they are to begin w/ I guess.

I'd sure watch those rattle snakes in TX. My neice lost her Rockwiler (120 lb dog) from a rattle snake bit.
If they don't catch me, I didn't break the law. Yea, I have an attitude when it comes to my babies getting hurt!

Ya It would be a dead bird. Most of our laws are retarded. I dont think clothes will work. I doubt they see color just mainly movement & size. Their claws alone would kill a small animal once it got them in it. Pellet gun? I'm thinking buck shot. I keep all my felonies a secret that way I dont have to go to jail,lol. Dead birds tale no tales. bury it, burn it or throw it in the trash. Gotta protect your babies.

What about a small paint ball gun, At least that way you will know if it comes back. What about a BB gun? Hopefully just standing right next to him will work. It should to be honest. I can't see a Hawk being that brave. LOL

Hawks - and other birds (eagles) worry me to death..

I was standing in my sister's back yard last summer - and a hawk came down from high in the sky behind me. I heard the noise of its coming and one of its wings actually passed through my hair -- it was going for a baby quail that was only a few feet in front of me. It didn't get that baby quail - but it certainly didn't mind my being there.

This makes me certain that a person could be only a foot or two away from their little dog - and a hawk would have no fear and wouldn't hesitate to take it before you even knew what happened.

*** I'm always looking for hawks and other birds - But, they can be there and you don't even know it. They can simply be sitting in a nearby tree, and you wouldn't see or nitice them in a million years.

***** This is definitely one of the reasons that I am glad that my little Yorkie grew to be 12 pounds...and maybe even a little more. I've seen the hawks in our area up close --- I'm not sure they could handle a 12-pound dog, but they certainly do live on mice and other small animals and rodents. So, I'm sure they wouldn't hesitate to go after a small Yorkie.

Do you know that an Eagle can see a rabbit a mile away! I'm sure we all know that hawks and eagles have awesome eyesight --- this just means to me that it's not only any of these birds that are close by that we need to worry about. They can come from afar!!!!!!!

PS: My sister's house (that I mentioned above) is in the middle of town - in a residentual area. She does have a lot of pine trees in her neighborhood with lots of squirrals and quail, etc. so, I'm sure this is what attracks the hawks.

Hawks are scarey predators! This Spring one came and took a baby rabbit that was right at my feet - less than a foot away. I was shocked Scared the patoot right outa me. I didn't think they would come so close and the baby had just come out from under a Juniper bush next to me. JUST - like maybe 20 seconds! After that I kept an eyeball on my toy poodle every time he was out. I used to put him on a tie out - but no more. I stay right at his side. And that's why I'm trying to potty train my baby Yorkie to a litter pan. Not working very well, but we're trying. If nothing else works, she'll wear diapers and live in the kitchen where there's no carpet before I'll let her pee outside! She's so tiny.

Buck shot makes too much noise, thats why I say a pellet gun. And I'd sure make sure NOT to throw it in the trash, hide the evidence, bury that thing. Pellet guns aren't dangerous as a real rifle, or a regular gun. And you don't have to worry about a child carrying a pellet rifle to school.

I'm scared of guns too, but not a bb or pellet rifle.

OMG this is scary....and Australia is meant to be dangerous....we dont have birds of prey anywhere near the cities (only in the REAL outback, but no one lives there anyway LOL)

There is almost nothing where I live that could hurt/kill my baby...the only thing I have to worry about is other dogs!

I saw this on the new this evening! definitely don't trust hawks or owls. I want to keep my furbabies safe.

My daughter's yorkie came up missing after being left outside on Christmas day while we were gone. We could not find any holes in the fenced area of the back yard. The gate locks from the inside and it's a large privacy fence, so I don't think anyone could have taken him. We posted signs and called shelters and even posted pictures on the internet, but no luck. I noticed a few days later that there was an owl hooting outside and I began hearing stories of large birds taking small dogs. I read your posting and am pretty sure now that is what happened. I'm just sick about the whole thing... we all love Scruffy so much. But now an even bigger problem is my 10 year old daughter; she has cried every day since Christmas. I don't know what to do to help her. And I feel so guilty because Scruffy usually goes places with us or stays in the house or garage, but I left him outside that day since he has a dog house and a large back yard to exercise in. I did not think in a suburban residential area a dog would be in danger of wildlife. I wish I had read this before Christmas. Does anyone have advise on how to console my daughter with such a tremendous loss?

Sorry for your loss. I don't know what to say but all that came across my mind is dog house or not, you shouldn't leave small dogs outside when you are out.
