Hawk Problem - I Need Advice i noticed a few days ago that a hawk was following us on our walks. it scares me to death. i know they can kill yorkies. i'm keeping a very close eye on romeo. do you know of any way to deter them??? do they have people who can remove them like they do with alligators? some people say if a yorkie has clothes on they won't attack because they confuse them with humans. is this true???? i need advice. please help. i feel terrorized by this hawk. |
We have them circle our yard sometimes. SCARY! I scooped up Ben the other day and brought him in. It was obvious he had caught a hawk's attention. I will fell better when he is a little bigger. I had not heard about the clothes detering them. Interesting! |
I don't know about clothes keeping the hawks from attacking, but that could be true...but just be very careful. They can swoop down fast before you have a chance to react and having your dog on a leash doesn't always save them because the talons or claws of the hawk dig into the dog's backbone, crippling or killing them. I hope this hawk decides to leave and give you some peace of mind! Good luck! |
we have a hawk that stays near our front yard. We've seen him multple times diving for the chipmunks. He seems to ignore Max, although we stay out of the front. Maybe he's getting his fill from the poor chipmunks. What are you going to do. That old food chain in action! Another concern is the crows. They are huge, fly together, and have attacked small animals if they think they are wounded or dead. Lot of predators out there. |

I think Hawks are protected at least here in Illinois so you can't remove them, just be extra careful. |
I have the smae problem. One morning when we went outside with Daisy there were about 4 of them circling around and one actually sat on our roof. I never thought they could take her until my dad said it. i never heard about the clothes, but if its true she's getting clothes and going to deal with it and i will still go out with her. |

Wow, I ddin't realize how big a problem this was!!! I have two hawks that stay in a tree about 400 feet from my house and I see them circle but I always stay very close to my babies. It only takes "seconds" for a hawk to scoop down and get his 'food'..........I've seen them put on the speed when they are after something............it's really scarey. Don't ever leave them alone for a sec if you have hawks or any type of prey bird. Very dangerous! |
I'm so sorry to hear this -- I'd be scared too!! Just always be on the look-out when you're walking Romeo. Hawks are super fast and can swoop down before you even realize what is going on. |
Last year an OWL swooped down and took off with one of my cats-that was bigger than my yorkie! We called the local wildlife center and was told they couldnt come trap it and we were not allowed to kill it...It was very large about 2 ft tall and had been sitting on our roof staulking our cats. We havent seen him this fall, but now there is a hawk, sitting in the trees outside our back yard, he's been there for weeks, we have to stay right with Lilly Belle when she goes to potty-good idea about putting an outfit on her-Im going to do that too! |
My Grandfather used to tie those aluminum pie plates to stakes in the garden to keep the birds away...I think it keeps them away because of the reflection of the light...Maybe you could put some kind of a reflector on the back of the furbabies clothes.. |

All birds of prey are Federally protected and it is illegal to kill them, in general. Now, you are allowed to destroy a bird that is killing livestock, poultry, etc. We had an owl that was coming in killing our show chickens. Dave trapped the owl (in a humane trap) and drove to a different area about 30 miles away and released the owl. We also have had a scary experience with a hawk circling above Ruby one day in the front yard. I scooped her up real quick and came inside. To this day, I dont' take my eye off of her and the sky when we are outside. If you have hawks in your area displaying this behaviour - I wouldn't leave my yorkie outside unattended at all. I don't think I would rely on clothing to make a difference either. The problem is their numbers are increasing, with society encroaching upon their territory we are destroying much of their food source; rats, mice, and other rodents. Because they are protected, their numbers continue to escalate and the food source continues to diminish. They are trying to survive and eat what is available to them, doesn't matter if it is your yorkie or not, to them. |
