Question about vet and my Baby Alright people, I am having an issue. Last week Baby had some blood in her stool so I called my vet, they said most likely no big deal, call if it continues. The next day she has diarrhea 3 times and then the next day I woke up to her vomiting and refusing to eat anything, even treats. So I call the vet and they say to just bring in a stool sample. I tell them that my Baby needs to be seen today (I was really worried about her becoming dehydrated... among other things.) So I get an appointment and they check her stool, say that everything is fine with it and then do an exam, checking her stomach and her temp... both are fine. She had been to the vet a week before and had lost 4 ounces in a week.. which is a lot considering she only weighs 6 lbs 4 ounces. That is a lot of weight to lose in a week. The vet tells me to start feeding her hamburger and rice for the next three days. They also gave her a shot of METOCLOPRAMIDE/REGLAN, METRONIDAZOLE (pill form to take for 6 days) and a syringe with DIARSNYL (to be administered twice daily, it's like a paste that she eats). So everything has been going fine and then today I noticed she vomited once while I was at work, and had bloody/ mucosy (sp?) diarrhea again. NOw I hate to panic but I looked online and found that there is a common bacteria.. for lack of better words.. anyways it's called HEMORRHAGIC GASTRIC ENTERITIS. Here is a link with more info about it http://www.shooterdog.com/alexfaq3.htm So now I need to know what to do? Should I change vets because I feel mine might not be doing a good enough job, or am I panicing? Can anyone give me some advice PLEASE! Thanks so much.

I don't know if its the same but that happened to my chi once and the vet got a sonogram on his stomach..turns out his stomach lining was scratched from all the table scraps we'd been feeding him. They put him on special food and medicine. If I was you and doubted the vet i'd get a second opinion. Oh and he also spent the night at the vet cause they wanted to watch him.

Thank you for your quick reply. I'm glad that your baby was fine! It's so scary when they get sick. So, I had too originally thought it could be from feeding her table scraps, and so we have stopped completly. However, she is still having this same problem. Another thing I was thinking about was the fact that she got sick like one week after I took her to the vet.. I wonder if she could have contracted something while at the vet???

I think I would get a second opinion. 4oz really is alot of weight in a week. Your vet might be right on but its worth a second check I would say. Any vomiting or bm with blood cannot be a good thing. Good luck and I hope Baby is feeling better soon. Dawn

Well the original vet appointment was for her annual shots...which she has never had a reaction to before.. So I'm really just so confused and I just worry about her..I don't want her to feel icky.

Giardia cannot always be seen in fecal exams, but the Metronidazole should take care of that and doesn't usually cause reactions. Never have heard of diarsnyl. I think I would feed boiled hamburger or skinless chicken and white rice. Mash it up well so she is eating the rice. I would also go get some Benebac (beneficial bacteria sold in tubes - inexpensive) to restore the good bacteria the antibiotics kills off. I would also give her Pedialyte (infant electrolyte solution) to restore the electrolyte imbalance caused by diarrhea. Buy the single serving plain flavored bottles because it has to be discarded 48 hours after opening. If you are able to get her to eat and drink the Pedialyte and she doesn't improve within the next 48 hours I would take her back to the vet. He did seem to cover the bases with the treatment at least for now.

Well then she seems to be on the right track. I had been feeding her boiled hamburger with rice.. but returned her to her normal food... I think I will make some more hamburger and rice for her though. I believe that the diarsynl is kind of what you are saying... the box says "Nutritional supplement as an aid in coating the intestinal mucosa". I dunno. I had given her some pedialyte that she drank the first day after the vet.. but I didn't know I had to discard it.. thanks for that advice.. now I feel stupid for spending $6.00 on that big bottle... Thanks for the advice... it is really helpful!

Thanks for your information you may have saved my Corky My husband and I returned from a brief five day trip to Cairo only to find our yorky, Corky, sick with diarrhea. The lady who looks after him said she took Corky and her yorky to the park and they played with another yorky while there. After playing for 20 minutes or so, the other yorky stopped and vomited everywhere. She said she asked the owner "did you know your dog is sick?" and the owner casually replied "oh yeah, she's had diarrhea and vomiting for five days now". Of course our friend screamed "AND YOU LET HER PLAY WITH OTHER DOGS?" So, of course, a little over 48 hours later, both her yorky and my Corky came down with bloody diarrhea etc. I ran him to the vet here in Paris and told him exactly what you had written on Yorky talk. He was very impressed and said, that is exactly right, where did you (a layperson) get that information? I told him and he jotted the web site down. I think he was intrigued. Corky has started his meds and I pray that the diarrhea stops soon. Apparently several other dogs have gone to our vet over the last few days, so it is definitely going around. Add to that that only about 20% of dog owners pick up after their dogs, so I think that is part of the reason it is spreading so fast in my neighbor hood. Thanks again all of you wonderful yorkie owners on yorkie talk.

Yorkie Kisses are the Best! Donating Member | My Chanel who never EVER gets sick had the same symptoms 2 weeks ago - 2 different vet visits and 10 butt baths in ONE day - she is finally back to feeling better - the 1st vet did give her a shot to settle her tummy like yours did so that sounds right to me - but he also put her on an antibiotic - and when I went to my other vet (my longtime vet where I used to live) because she still threw up ...He prescribed Reglan and told me to STOP the antibiotic - I trust him because he's known her since she was a baby and he's awesome - She's much better now but did still get sick a few times on the meds - We also had bloodwork done and IF you feel there is more going on - do that too. I can't say it's a cure but it gives your vet more to work with. I hope your Baby feels better - it's so hard seeing them sick. |

I live in the Houston area also. So I'll be keeping an eye on my babies. Sometimes my husband and I take them to Petsmart, but I think I'll cancel that trip too. Thanks to you guys and this website, I know what to keep an eye out for if this thing is going around. The owner who took her sick baby out was definitely being irresponsible! Our little city just opened a dog park, but I'm not sure I want to use it now....
