| Heartworm pill or not.... Gino has just turned 8 mos. old and he is weighing in at 3lbs. I haven't started his heartworm pill just yet and I was wondering if any of you guys had any reservations about it with your little ones. Summer is approaching and we spend lots of time on our boat. I know in my heart it is the right thing to do but........Just need some more reassurance. Thanks so much. |

| I think the heartworm pill is less risky than getting heartworms. I've not heard of anyone having problems with them. I'm gonna start Lexy on them next week. I've just wormed her and didn't want to put too much in her little system at once, but I think she will handle it fine. She is 1 3/4 lbs. at 4 months old and the vet didn't hesitate to give her heartworm pills.

| Never had any problem the heartworm meds. All three of mine are on it. It's a good thing to have them on.

| I've never heard of anyone having a problem with the meds either but I know how you feel. I was nervous at first too. I would give him half, wait about twenty minutes to see how he reacted and then give him the rest. He's never had a problem.

| This thread got me wondering about the dangers of the medication. I do agree that it is better to give it than risk your dog getting heartworms but have always tried to give my dogs as few doses a year as possible. It gets cold here so they only need it about half the year. Anyway, I've been reading online about it and a lot of people say it is safe to give the medication every forty five days instead of every thirty. One of the reasons they say vets tell you every thirty days is because it is easier for people to remember but the chemicals are effective for at least forty five days. Has anyone else heard this or give it to your dogs this way?

| My vet had me start Tucker on heartworm meds last month. He was 4 months & only 2.5 pounds. He was fine - I feel better having him on them than not.

| Heartworm pills We too have started using the heartworm pills, my vet agreed that it would be best for the kids sake and we are using the one that kills also ringworms and hookworms, so that safe for the family with her living inside with us, no worms for the kids...lol.. No really when I was little my mom and dad got me a poodle and untredted for ringworm the dog passed it to me therefore I had to have laser treatments on my face for it to go away I was just 5 and they had to keep me out of school until cleared up I had several treatments and we had to get rid of the poodle.....I was scared about this with Ruby but the vet said to worm her and use heartworm pills she'll be fine and the family will be too! USE heartworm. !!!! |

| Heartworm meds are NOT the usual concept of vaccines. Puppies over 12 weeks of age can safely be given the meds like Ivermectin-products. The med does not prevent heartworms like, say distemper vaccine does. Heartworm meds kill any larvae that might have formed as a result of exposure to infectious skeeters in the past 30 days.. So, most of us should have started our babies on the meds already. But, of course, your vet is the authority on your individual baby.. |

| After my experience with the rabies shot, I am reluctant to give Stewie anything. I did ask about an alternative to the heartworm pill and foudn out there is something that they can put between their shoulder blades (kinda like flea stuff) It is just as effective. Maybe those concerned can ask your vet about it.
