| Yorkies and Working Full Time... Hi everyone, I just want to place a post and see everyones responses to help me make a decision. I would love with all my heart to get a Yorkie. I am 32 years old, no children, no partner, flat with my brother. I am about to go into a shift working position (I am a midwife). My heart yearns to have a puppy and I am thinking of all the benefits from my end of getting one. However my thoughts against this are due to the fact that he may spend some time on his own. Although I would be doing shift work, chances are that my brother would be home to be with him if I wasn't, but that would not always be the case. I really need some honest opinions here from owners, as to what your views are on leaving their babies at home while they work (if they do!). My mothers advice was if I thought that was a problem, then get two so they can keep each other company! Please let me know your honest views!! Many thanks .... theresa |

| I personally would get a pair to keep them company. Maybe you can get one and your brother another. You have to work and it seems like he is going to help you care for them, so don't stress it. Good luck!

| I agree. Get two. They get so lonely by themselves. They are well-known to suffer from separation anxiety. However, I have read that you shouldn't get litter mates, because they will bond with each other and not you. Double trouble and double the fun!

| Definitely get two. My husband and I both work full time, and our little guys are just fine with each other all day. They don't really mind it at all when we leave, because they each get a treat when it's time to go to their crate for the day. I don't agree with yorkieusa about not getting litter mates, though. Ours are brothers from the same litter, and they've definitely bonded to us. Of course, they act like brothers, too - one minute they're fighting, the next minute they're best friends.

Phantom Queen Morrigan Donating Member | If you wanna get two, get two. However if two seems like too much money right now, then just get teh one. I have a puppy who's 5 1/2 months. I've had her since she was 3 months. She is left alone every weekend for 4 hours clips. i leave the house at 7:30 and don't come hom till 12, and then i leave at 1 and come home at 4:30. she does just fine. she has toys to play with, water and food. she doesn't potty in her pen and she mostly just sleeps all the time.

Donating YT 30K Club Member | Cali is the 4th puppy I have had since leaving home, many years ago. The first 3 were all when I worked full time. I had only one at a time, and left them in a gated off area with paper down, My husband worked shorter hours and had diffeenet days off than I did. so usually a puppy would be alone about 6-7 hours 4 days a week. They all did fine. With Cali I am home fulltime and it was easier to train her and I also have a 9 year old pom so she isn't alone evenwhen I am out. I would definatley try and get one that is a little older and not a real tiny one.

| I am single and work two jobs, but do work from home some of the time. I plan my schedule so that I can come home and check on Gracie and feed her. She does just fine kept in her x-pen with her crate inside of that. Two things to consider. Young puppies need to eat 3-4 times per day. My Gracie is 14 weeks old and still does not like dry food, so I have to be here to feed her once during the day. Yorkie puppies are prone to low blood sugar if they don't eat, and that could be deadly if it happens. The second thing is the potty pads. Gracie can make a real mess with those, whether it be shredding them, moving them around or using them for the intended purpose. One episode of loose stools and you will understand what I mean. I usually clean up at least one poo during the day so she does not get playing and step in it and make a bigger mess. This is gross, but it is life. My suggestion would be if you want a puppy (or two), to make arrangements for someone to check on it at least once during the day. Is there a friend, neighbor or perhaps a pet sitter you could hire to check on the baby when your brother cannot? When working day shift, you could consider doggie day car for one or two days per week as well. Singleness should not prohibit having a puppy, lots of us do it. You just need to prepare and plan ahead. Good luck to you!

| My husband and I work full-time as well. We have two dogs however we still have a dog walker come in midday to walk them and to play with them a little. I think it gives them a nice break from the boredom. If you can't afford two, then consider getting someone to come in when you are not at home to give the dog a walk and a bit of playtime. It's worth every penny to keep our babies happy!! BTW, you will never be sorry getting a yorkie. They are the most wonderful, special dogs! My little Muffin is the love of my life and so affectionate. I just want to eat her up! Good luck. |

I only have one little girl and she is around a year old and I work full time and go home at lunch to spend my hour with her as I only work about 10 minutes from home. I thought about getting two at first but my breeder told me one to start out and get it trained how I want it first and see how that goes. As two can be more than what you have time for, working full time. Well, I am glad I listened as I love my Balli and she is a sweet happy well adjusted little girl. However we both Balli and I, have decided now it is time to get another baby. I can hardly wait! My breeder said now is a good time as Balli is young enough to still want to play. Plus my breeder doesn't let the puppies leave until about 4 months. As she spays and nueters them first. Something I do not have to worry about.

| I work full-time and only have one yorkie and am (newly) single. In the morning I leave him in his crate in the bedroom (he sleeps in the actual bed with me at night) so he can go back to sleep. I come home at lunch to give him a snack, some potty time if he wants to go, and some ball playing. When I have to go back I leave him in the living room with his xpen, potty pad, bed and toys so he can stretch his legs. I come home around 5:30 and he eats dinner and goes for a walk outside. I, too, had the same reservations as you about getting a yorkie but I just knew I wanted one SO SO badly. Go for it! If your yorkie ever seems lonely you can always add a second. Mine doesn't seem to really mind being alone. He's a bit of an attention hog.

| Oh, one more thing I should add... if you're a midwife you probably won't be coming home for lunch breaks. There are days when I can't leave work at lunch and I just make sure I leave him in his xpen with some food. He's fine when I come home.

| After reading this post I want to congratulate all the ones that work full time & find time in the day to come home & check on their babies. Myself right now, I am semi retired & don't have to work, but if I did I would do the same. I have a girlfriend that wanted to get a yorkie or maltese. I told her if she had to leave them for 9 or more hours a day without being able to check on them, then why get one? Get a dog that can handle the separation for a long period or get a cat. |
