| Very seldom anymore do we have accidents as far as peeing, but they do have accidents pooping. I would like to get rid of my carpet too, but which is best laminate or hardwood. Do both have to be sealed? I saw in one of the above posts that moving stuff will scratch them...do you put somethng on chairs, sofas..etc to prevent that. I just don't want to regret getting rid of the carpet. What about being colder? Our furnace has a heat pump and the air that comes from the registers feels cool, but the room feels warm and nice. I'm also worried about extra noise that carpet seems to muffle out. Good someone give me good advice?

| My parents just put laminate hardwood and ceramic tiles all over our house. And lemme tell you, are they so glad!! Not only does it look way nicer, it smells much better!! Not saying that my parents house smelled nasty, but you know the dog smell I'm talking about! I would recommend laminate over hardwood to someone who has young children, constant traffic in their house, and are really worried about accidents (scratches, marks, dog accidents, KID accidents, lol) messing up the floor.

| We have been doing reseach since hubby is in Management at Home Depot it not to hard. This is what we are finding out. Laminate flooring and hardwood flooring are two differnent things Laminate flooring has a wax seal where they are snapped together and are pet proof. Hardwood floors are not they are nailed and not pet proof if urine goes in groves it could damage wood might get mildew. Either way the carpet will be coming out. We do all the remodeling ourselves and it take alot of time. Thank you for all your replies its been a big help. CarolMinnie Last edited by Dartprincess; 09-10-2006 at 08:16 AM. |

| I still am very happy with the hardwood but doesn't mean I might not have liked the laminate just as well or better. Hardwood does scratch but I don't really let that worry me. The only drawback I have seen is that Little Bit slides when she is going for the ball we've thrown. At first, she would slide right into the x pen or wall but now she has learned to gauge her sliding distance and usually doesn't hit anything. The other problem is that if she gets real excited jumping up and down on her hind legs, sometimes her paws go out from under her and she takes a pretty good fall. But all in all, I'd not put carpet back for sure. I thought I was keeping a pretty clean house until I saw what was under the carpet. I just like the idea of knowing my floor is actually clean. I'm sure you will love the laminate as well. Its just a hard clean surface instead of hidden lurking dangers in the carpet. Also, in the interest of full disclosure, yes, without rugs, your house will be colder and noisier. Down here in the south, the cold hasn't really been a problem and before Little Bit, I did have area rugs that could be easily cleaned or replaced if necessary. Since Little Bit is not yet (if ever) perfectly potty trained, the rugs have had to go. Little Bit can't seem to tell the difference between a throw rug and a pee pad. |

| I will probably go with laminate and I'm planning on checking out someplaces this next weekend. In todays Sunday paper there were some add from Lowe's, Menard's and Home Depot and since Lafayette is only 25 minutes away that's where I'll be heading. Thanks for all the great information, now if I can only find one I'll like. Also, we are in Indiana so it gets cold here in the winter. Do throw rugs help quite a bit with the sound and cold?

| For Yorkie3. To move furniture on hardwood floors, I put a rug upside down, underneath the furniture to keep it from scratching the floor. I use one upside down rug for each side of the furniture. That also makes the furniture slide easily on the floor, as well as keeps the furniture from scratching the floor. As for messes on the floor, I only have hardwood in my bedroom. I've been lucky, Adonis has never went on it. Venus is still being crate trained, so she hasn't been back there. I put it down myself, and there are small cracks in it, so Venus won't be going back there, till she's totally trained! |

| A large area rug will help with the cold & noise but your pup still may use it for potty. They seem to prefer the rug to the hard floor. However, if you just get an inexpensive one from Walmart or such, you can ditch it when you are done with potty training & move on to something nicer., The throw rugs are just for foot wiping ability, they don't really do anything for the cold or noise. Good luck to you. |
