| Rabies shot or not?????????? As most of you know, I'm really concerned about Tia's weight. She is due for her rabies shot next week and after reading some posts about over vaccinations and such, I don't know if this is a wise decision. Tia is 17 weeks and 1.6 pounds. I have her indoors most of the time and she doesn't go to kennels, doggy daycares or anywhere else that may require this shot. So what do you think????? Should i risk it?

| I think I would wait for awhile. I usually wait until mine are 6 months old. Ask for the 3 year rabie shot. You may also ask them to split the shot 1/2 dose now and 1/2 dose later. Never let them give the annuals and the rabies at the same time. |

| shot I would not give her one..the only problem that could occur is if she ever bit someone, then you have to show the rabies record..if she does not have one, then they keep them in quarantine for 14 days..not sure about Canada. PS...I am told all rabies shots have to be one year shots the first time..then they can have 3 yrs shots.. |

| As long as she is not out where she comes in contact with other animals, I would wait. |

| I do not blame you for wanting to wait. I did not get Louie's rabies shot until 7 months and he was still 2.5lbs. I would just be careful not to let your baby around animals that you are not sure of vaccinations. Also, I know there is a law in Louisiana that all pets over 3months have to be given the rabies shot and then a booster every 12 months. (unless given 3yr. shot) I don't think it's fair to those with small doggies, but it's the law. You can probably use google to find the law in your state.

Is giving it in two does done? I did ask my Vet about doing that and while I was there he called the manufacturer and they said it wouldn't be effective. It needed to be done all at once. He was talking to them right in front of me. I am just curious if others know it can be done and be effective. Izzie just turned 6 months on 8/1 and weighs 2 lbs 14 ozs. She will be getting her rabie shot at the end of the month...only because it's the law. Joey is due for his rabie and annuals at the end of the month. I didn't know better when he was younger, so they gave him his shots all at once and it didn't bother him. Now I'm afraid...so he shouldn't get them all at once?

I know they give small dogs the same dosage as big dogs. No wonder it makes a small dog sick. I do know some who do split the annual shot in two shots (2 weeks apart)on puppies and small dogs. I do not do the annuals and rabies at the same time..because it does make mine sick. I get the rabies one month and the annuals a month or two later. I think it's too hard on their system, to get both at the same time. | |

| My AprilLove had her rabies at 6 months and she was 2 lbs. 10 oz. She had no reactions. I did her vaccines separate from the rabies a week before the rablies (learned that here) She did have a slight reaction but not serious to the bordello shot (when she was 12 weeks), so I did not have another one done since she wil never be boarded. the one thing that burns me is that the vaccines use the same amount whether the puppy is a 2 lb yorkie or a 50 husky. I don't get it and still can't find legitimate research that explains why. You would think the dose would be less based on the weight of the pup.

| where i am its the law.... you can't bring them to the groomers, puppy class or anywhere else without a rabies shot and it has to be done before they are 5months old... which is too bad seeing my lil one pretty much never goes anywhere except the vet and the groomers |

| Most of the time groomers will ask if the dog has had bordatella, too. If our pups are at the groomers and there are dogs there who haven't had it, our little ones could pick it up pretty easily. Yikes, I just want to keep mine indoors all the time!!! omega |

| It is the law here also. However....Cowboy weighs just a smidge over 3 pounds and is one year old....I never got his. It just scares be because of his size. I am going to do it soon though because I feel that him being mature and not a puppy will help factor in. I am very thankful I never got a fine over it...they are quite hefty and they don't accept excuses for not having done it sooner. I'd check the law in your state and then wait til the last minute to get it done. I have 3 other Yorkies and none of them ever had a reaction to the rabies shot. |

| Thanks for all your good advise. It sounds like it should be okay if I have the vet split up the shots. Its so confusing sometimes to know what to do! I find it really funny how people seek out these little guys. I would never recommend to anyone getting a small furbaby without a lot of research as to what you are getting yourself into!
