| I would think really hard about if you got caught if you do go through with getting the puppy. I also got a puppy when I knew I couldn't my apartment complex is far away from the front building and I didn't think the landlord would ever know...but she found out and I was told she had to leave IMMEDIATLEY! so now my baby is 115 miles away with my mom until I come home for the summer..I am moving into a house where I can have her next semester but this is going to be the longest month of my life. I just left her with my parents today and when I got home from work tonite I almost started crying...the first thing I do when i get home from work is snuggle my puppy and take her outside...I don't think I can go without her!!! It is the worst!!

| Food for thought In the event you decide to bring this wonderful new baby into your welcoming family. If they find out and say you have to get rid of them or move then what. I think though at times we can get away with stuff. Lord knows I have. I have three paid for one. But my apartment allows them so it is not to weird to take them out. I have to hide the excess. Just make sure before you do this. I know that if they said its them or you. Just food for thought |

| Not a good idea Hiding an animal is never a good idea. I used to own rentals and I allowed pets, but I charged an extra deposit and most often it was used to repair things the animals damaged. I am an animal lover and when I got my two boys I went to the landlord and offered them the moon if they would allow my two babies, they would not budge. Luckily they did give me the time to locate another place to live. Here in CA, they only have to give you 72 hours to either get rid of the animal or move. What if your landlord finds out and gives you notice, do you have an alternative place in mind? Will your pups possibly end up in rescue? When you take on the responsibility, and knowingly break your lease, please have an alternative plan or the money to move in mind. Here in CA there are not a lot of places that allow dogs, I was lucky and found such a place (actually hate the complex, but they allow my babies). One thing to keep in mind, if you have a pet for some time (even though your lease says no pets) and the landlord knows about and does nothing for a period of time, that can be considered accepting the pet without changing the lease. Same thing as if you continually pay your rent late and the landlord accepts that payment for a period of time, paying your rent late constitutes a change in the lease that they accept. A good book for anyone renting whether tenant or landlord is a basic book on both sides rights. Good luck |

| I've done this a long time ago. In an apartment. I snuck my poodle in. We didn't live there long before we moved out though-felt too risky. I would imagine it wouldn't be good if the person caught the dog. If it were me, I think I would start looking for something that alowed dogs. I couldn't live without a pet, and I would want to be relaxed and comfortable about the situation-not have to hide. This is a personal preference though. Everyone will have different answers. Good luck with whatever you decide.

| My daughter got a puppy when living in an apartment where no pets were allowed. That puppy ended up spending a lot of time at my house because she couldn't leave him there alone for fear he'd bark...which he did now and then. Other's in the apartment building found out about Baxter and pretty soon lots of them had puppies. The resident manager found out about my daughter's puppy, but thankfully, she liked my daughter and told others she had the dog for medical reasons. The landlord never did find out about the puppy but we figured it was just a matter of time. She now bought her own home, but while in the apartment, there was always the stress of sneaking the dog in and out and whenever maintenance or someone else was expected in the building, we would have to get Baxter out. I hope you can find a place to rent that will accept pets...it is just so much more enjoyable to not have to worry about keeping them hidden and quiet! Best wishes! |

| I know is going to be hard but if you decide to get your baby you should have a backup plan. I think is better to be safe than sorry. Good luck in your decision. |

| I live in an apartment that allows dogs, but you have to pay a $200 non-refundable pet deposit as well as an extra $35 a month per pet. I found out that the complex's policy is to replace the carpet once a year if there are pets in the apartment, or every 2 years if there are not pets. Well our carpet was not new when we moved in. Therefore, they will replace our carpet when we move, NO MATTER WHAT! So why in the world would I pay them more just to do what they are going to do anyway!!??? That's my logical reasoning as to why we are not paying the deposit or extra monthly fee. We got Hercules in November and had some bad bathroom plumbing issues for a while. When maintenance came out, we put him in the bedroom. But he isn't a barker, so that isn't a problem. We got Athena last month, and she is a lot different than Hercules! She'll bark when she hears people. We got notice a week after we got her that they were going to come out to do a "yearly maintenance" check. Luckily a good friend lives in the complex as well, so I took my dogs over to her apartment when they did our check. (She also has an "illegal" dog, so hers stayed at our apartment when she had her check). So yes, you can get away with it. We have for almost 6 months now! But be prepared to pay extra when you move if there is damage. But if you watch your pup closely and carefully like you should when they are so young, it should be minimal.

| This is actually how I ended up with my Biddy. My mom owns a condo, and it doesn't say anywhere that she can't have pets. So she got Biddy as a puppy, but soon the neighbors started to complain about the noise (even though I can't imagine that Biddy's baby bark was very loud!). Andway the condo committee got together & told my mom that she had to get rid of the puppy. She called me in tears and I reluctantly decided to take Biddy in. It was the best thing that ever happened to me!!! Now I have 2 yorkies and I am so grateful for them. Although, I keep telling my mom that she should be paying child support... |

| Worried My daughter purchased a beautiful little silky terrier. I fell in love with it. Told everyone about my new "grandson". Well two weeks later I have the puppy because her lease said no pets and the neighbor complained because he barked. Now she is totally devastated and I have a new puppy. I love him... and am very attached to him now.. but she is still devastated and they are signed into their lease for a year. If you are going to do it, make sure you able to deal with the consequences - possibly a broken heart! Last edited by NIGHTMARE; 04-25-2005 at 11:25 AM. |

| I justed wanted to add that there is no such thing as an "immediate eviction". There are legal processes and procedures that must be followed with notices , etc. In Claifornia, if the property management discovered the dog, they would serve you with a 3 day notice to comply with the terms of the agreement and remove the dog from the premises. If you failed to do that they would file an Unlawful Detainer action against you and set a hearing date no sooner than 20 day. Once the hearing is over you have an additional 5 days to move so you would always have at least 28 days before you would have to move if they caught you with the dog. Good info... Thanks Kim. My husband and I plan on moving anyway, because you guys are right when you say it is much more enjoyable to have pets when you don't have to hide it! But, obviously, a lot of people do do it. But thanks everyone! | |

| I've never lived anywhere that pets haven't been allowed. Before I had Frankie I did live somewhere you where you could only have 1 pet and I had 3 cats, so I lied about that I never was concerned even when people would come over 2 of the cats would hide anyway. But I have thought about this recently I'm currently living with my mom, due to my dad passing and a bad break upon my end. And I just recently started panicing about this now that I have 3 cats and a dog, I'm never going to find anywhere that will allow that so I will definately be keeping that little fact from my future landlord..
