I live in an apartment that allows dogs, but you have to pay a $200 non-refundable pet deposit as well as an extra $35 a month per pet. I found out that the complex's policy is to replace the carpet once a year if there are pets in the apartment, or every 2 years if there are not pets. Well our carpet was not new when we moved in. Therefore, they will replace our carpet when we move, NO MATTER WHAT! So why in the world would I pay them more just to do what they are going to do anyway!!??? That's my logical reasoning as to why we are not paying the deposit or extra monthly fee.
We got Hercules in November and had some bad bathroom plumbing issues for a while. When maintenance came out, we put him in the bedroom. But he isn't a barker, so that isn't a problem.
We got Athena last month, and she is a lot different than Hercules! She'll bark when she hears people. We got notice a week after we got her that they were going to come out to do a "yearly maintenance" check. Luckily a good friend lives in the complex as well, so I took my dogs over to her apartment when they did our check. (She also has an "illegal" dog, so hers stayed at our apartment when she had her check).
So yes, you can get away with it. We have for almost 6 months now! But be prepared to pay extra when you move if there is damage. But if you watch your pup closely and carefully like you should when they are so young, it should be minimal.
