Sturbridge Farms Has anybody ever heard of sturbridge farms or had any experiences with them. They are located in Thompsontown Pennsylvania. I am looking to purchase a yorkie, have spoken with them over the phone, they were very friendly and seemed very concerned about the puppies welfare and what type of home it would be going to. I would just like to know if anybody has ever heard of or dealt with them. I would also like to know from the breeders on this forum if you would ever or have ever accepted using a puppy escrow account. The payment is sent to a 3rd party and seller receives the payment once the puppy is delivered and confirmed to be in good health and acceptable. Yes, I know, I should buy a puppy locally, but that is not always possible and I just fell in love with this certain puppy I saw. Thanks. Last edited by mojo; 04-09-2005 at 09:33 PM.

Hi Mojo: I have not heard of that one, but I would ask to see pictures of the parents, talk to their vet and get other references if possible as well as check the AKC suspended list. You can usually tell from yur gut and whether they ask more questions of you than you ask of them. etc. Do they have a website?

Just a quick warning, Pennsylvania is the worst state in the country to get a dog, IMO. It's Amish country and the Amish run puppy mills.

I did a search and they look like a broker. They have a lot of different breeds. Brokers are not all bad, but there are some really bad ones. Just be careful and check everyhting out with what you've learned on here!

| this was on their website Contact Marlene Lippert, Director of the SBA, at Sturbridge Farm directly by calling: (717)463-9737 -------------------------------------------------------------------------- A special note from the director of the SBA The SBA does not condone or support Puppy Mills. If you have heard anything to the contrary from any websites with "forums" (Breed specific websites where people go to discuss their breeds and share information) let me assure you, their accusations have no basis in reality. They are libel, slanderous, and completely untrue. We strive to bring the public puppies from loving families doing their best to raise happy, healthy dogs. The small breeders of today are being almost taken out of business by the commercial operations that MASS PRODUCE multiple breeds. These operations we consider "Puppy Mills". The SBA has been given a voice on the internet and joined together as a group, approximately 16 small breeders, allowing them to reach a wider market. Many of the breeders in the SBA, as well as Marlene Lippert herself, are kennels lisenced by the state of PA certified for the health and well-being of the dogs, usually only because in their townships they have enough dogs to be considered a kennel (which is often only 5 or more). Not only do they reach these usually low expectations, but exceed them and include love and socializing in their daily routine.

SBA is a broker I take it, or an on line pet store? I don't know about this particular breeder but not all breeders in Pa or even Mo are puppymills. I would always advise to visit any breeder you buy from. There is no other way to be sure no matter what state.

I would avise you to try to find out if they are licensed by the USDA. The USDA license is a livestock license(I have been told) and the dogs can be treated same as cows, pigs, goats and so on. IF you go to the place where the puppies are housed, that frequently is NOT the real breeding area/bldg. Also, some do not use machinery/phones and get someone else to do their dirty work for them..You drive down a country lane to a nice, clean white farm house. You get there and the seller is not the breeder and they might show you a dog that is supposed to be the parent(S) and often that dog has no relationship to the puppy! I saw a very sick little girl in my vet's office-the owners had bought 2 puppies from same person, living like I described above, the week of Christmas. It was New Years Day and the male had already died of heart failure and the little girl had, hydrocephaly, liver shunt, heart murmur and WAS COVERED FROM HER NECK DOWN WITH RINGWORM!! She died later that day. The owners told me where they got her and I said"I am sure you have already been told your puppy came from a mill!" They looked at each other and said how did she know? They had heard many different barking sounds, and smelled odors from back there. One of the best known Yorkie breeders is in PA. The secy of YTCA lives in PA. Another show breeder lives in PA. Yes, there are reputable breeders up there, but they are a minority.. I will not even buy Amish cole slaw or potato salad at the grocery store even though I know they had nothing to do with the food. Just my way of protesting, I guess.

I've heard of sturbridge farms. I ran across their listing for certain breeds on dogbreedinfo.com. I also recall emailing them on certain breeds, asking prices and etc. I did get a response but I felt the prices were kinda high and also the person that contacted me did not seem to be the actual breeder. Seemed to me like a broker type thing and I left it at that. Now I'm not saying thats what it is cause I really do not know but I moved on. It seems a big portion of the amish around here do breed. Perhaps run puppymills, I really dont know. I know you could usually tell in their voice over the phone(also they list no sunday calls in their newspaper ads.) When I bought my bichon from a private breeder she said she would make it clear to any amish that called that she would not sell to them. But it doesnt mean everyone in PA is amish and full of bad breeders. I would do a search for info on the type of payment they are asking you for. I've lived in PA for about 1.5 years, moved from NYC so I'm not too familiar with things around here. Heres a listing for sturbridge... http://breeders.dogbreedinfo.com/ind...20030507180831

AMish Puppymills I live near Amish country... Shipshewana, IN.. THere are so many puppy mills there. I saw one yesterday on my way home from there that was being run as a buisness. It's called Wana Pet : AKC Toy Puppies. The establishment looks nice until you actually look in the back and see the stacked cages with several dogs in each cage. It's so sad. This was my second experience with the Amish puppymills. When I was looking around for a puppy I stopped at an Amish house that just said small breed puppies for sale. This man had like 35+ females and 15+ males. PLus about 10 litters of puppies. It was so sad. After I left I couldn't quit thinking about these poor animals never being able to run in the grass or play. I called the County Animal COntrol and there was nothing she could do because he had a breeders license and the dogs has shelter and food + water. It's just so sad. I want to go one night and release all the dogs from their cages into my car and take them to safety. This is a very big market for the amish. It's so sad and I wish there was something I could do about it. Make sure you never buy from them. IT just supports them doing it. Of course the puppies are cute, but think of all the pain it's poor mother and father are enduring. The mom is being overbred, they are both unsocialized and they may never know what it's like to have the love and company of a human friend. SOrry this is so long but this is something i feel so strongly about.
