Oh, and to whomever compared docking a Yorkie's tail at an older age to circumsicion (sp?) at an older age- you couldn't be FURTHER off. You're trying to compare a sexual organ being operated on to a tail. While both have nerve ending, one is WAyyyy more laden w/ nerves than the other. Again, I'm sure it's painful. But pain is something we put our dogs through ROUTINELY for a spay/neuter. A docked tail has both an aesthetic value (to some) and also poses great health benefits for some. OH! And we should think of AGING Yorkies. They tail is beautiful NOW, but as they age and their hair receeds...yeah, that glorious flag winds up looking like a dried out rats tail. JMO!

i have two 12 year old yorkies with full tails and there tails are still PRETTY

spaying a female is better for there health, having a male fixed is better for there health,having a dog docked is no longer done for there health to prevent injurys as they are no longer working dogs its just done for vanity. ive had yorkies with docked tails which were done before i got them and i have got 2 yorkies now who have full tails as i bred them, i if im honest prefer how the dock tail looks but i think its cruel so i wouldnt have it done and put my 2 yorkies through pain just cos i prefer how it looks jmo.

I just got a new puppy that was undocked. I was really disappointed at first, because I liked the docked tail. Now that I have her the tail looks so natural. Every time I see her wag it it makes me happy. I, too, thought about docking it at a later date, but now I wouldn't even if no pain was involved. I love her and her tail!

I will concede that not ALL Yorkies work any more. In fact MOST don't. However mine DO! And so I dislike the long tail. Yeah, I think it's cute, but not for me.

But that's just it. At the age (3-5 days) when the tails are dock, the nerves in the tail are not yet functioning as an adult dog's tail would. That is why it is done at this age w/out full anesthesia. Sooooo, if the nerves are not actually receptive to pain yet, and it doesn't hurt, then it's OK in your book...is that what you are saying? If so, that's generally the case with the procedure...so you therefore object because......

I'd say leave it long especially since she's older. I've seen pups with long tails and I think it's cute.

Baby's tail was docked when I got her, but if it wasn't, I would have left it. I also like Yorkies with down ears!

Hey, down ears and an undocked tail. Now THAT would be adorable.

Well it looks like I might have just that. A yorkie with floppy ears and a non docked tail.

Not sure about how I feel about that, I would like her to look somewhat like a yorkie. Only time will tell

If given the choice I would have opted to leave Nikko's tail intact. When I bought him he was already docked. Whenever he is happy and he wags that little stub I wonder what he would look like with his full tail. I think more breeders should give a choice to their buyers. While many people will continue to choose docked tails, i am sure there will be many like myself that would rather leave their dogs the way nature intended.

Well, I figure that I already have Baby who looks like a Yorkie, so I wouldn't mind having one that's "out of the ordinary."

I have heard this same idea over and over again--that very young pups do not feel pain like an older dog. I would like to know how this is known and if there is any scientific evidence supporting this. I think it might be propoganda to make people feel better about inflicting pain on a puppy.

I would leave it intact. My puppy was docked at a few days old and while I'm okay with that, I also like the longer tail on the Yorkie. The tail is never that big or anything anyway and it adds a nice counter-balance to the overall look of the dog. She's too old I think to have it done and she's probably used to it by now. It's strictly speaking a 'mutilation' at this stage

The law here bans docking unless it is carried out under ten days old by a veterinary surgeon. According to my breeder, it is 'snipped' off and the puppies don't make any movement or sound... so I'm guessing why they say it doesn't hurt. I'm not sure that that's necessarily true tho'

I agree. Of course, by the time most potential buyers see the pups, they will be several weeks old.

Princess's tail is docked, butu she was only a day old when they did it.
I wouldn't mind if she had a tail, I think their cute.

My Twinkle's tail is au natural, and I love it as she is constantly wagging, and many people pass comment on how cute it is. Hers is curly like she has had rollers in it, I wouldnt have her any other way!!
