I was told by my vet it could be done but have to be considered a surgery. I just could not it to him! And I'm happy I didn't. I now have another yorkie and she does have her tail docked and I prefer the long tail but that's my opinion.

Tibbe's tail is docked and he looks like a little cobby cube! But Yorkies are cute with or without tails.

Mine came with docked tails but I would never dock a yorkie who had a tail. It is much like cropping ears, it's all for show. This would be a surgery on your dog for a complety cosmetic reason- you really want to put your pup though all that?If I were you I would happily leave the tail, it's part of her character now.

i have 2 yorkies a male whose tale isn't docked and a female who is docked. the breeder of my boy also didn't like docking tails, she thought it was mean to do. i love his long tail. i keep the length of the hair on his tail at like 3 to 4 inches long and its like a little pom pom. i love it i get alot of comments because it's not the norm for a yorkie to have a tail. my little guy is unique. and the female yorkie i got, her breeder docked her tail. the way i see it unless you plan to show your dog who cares if it's docked or not you'll love your dog regardless. My 2 older yorkie kiddos' tails are cropped...but my Pfeiffer girl's tail is not cropped and it is STUNNING -- and *such* a part of her personality and expression.

I hope someday tail amputation is banned here in the US. I find it both barbaric and unnecessary, personally.

Finster is docked too.. it was the Lady's choice we got him from..

we had a cat once that needed the tail docked due to obsessive chewing on it
He had to be put under and was a long recovery time.. he wouldn't leave it alone..silly cat..

I completely agree! If you aren't going to show the dog then why dock the tail? I wish they would change the standard in the AKC to get rid of the tail docking and make a natural tail acceptable and all dogs with already docked tails can still show. My Yorkie came to me with a docked tail but the Yorkie mix we are getting will have a tail and I can't wait to see what it looks like when she is grown!

My thoughts exactly and I didn't circumcise my baby, nor would I go under the knife unless life threatening. My 2 biewers both have tails, my traditional has a stub. I prefer the tails. They carry them high when their strutting their stuff.

I'm wondering about the idea of the docked tail being the "breed standard.' its the term that confuses me because I think "breed" suggests something that is part of well, breeding practices. And since we can't breed a Yorkie without a tail, why is docking tail "breed standard"?
I'm not trying to be controversial or argue, I really don't understand.

It became a standard when they were used as ratters. They puller the dogs out by the tail. The tip would break. Only way it can be changed is if ppl made the change ..I seen it done. Sometimes they cry sometimes not. But they twist it off. If you circumcised your boy its no different.

My Daisy's tail is docked, the breeder did it when she was 3 days old. I think it looks cute and funny, especially when she wags it.
