Angry My Baby Got Pepper Sprayed!!

Hi Gang,

Yesterday afternoon I was so mad , I was going to take a nap with Buffy in my room when Susie came running in with my 3# 5 month Yorkie Duncan in her arms and told me the mailman had pepper sprayed him mg:

I told her to start running water over his face and to tilt him forward so the water doesn't go in his nose and into his lungs, while I ran to get towels.

When I got back his little face was all wet and he could not open his eyes I couldn't tell if it was helping him or what he was feeling. So I licked him on the forehead and that sh## burns like a jalapeno chili my mouth and lips were on fire! He shook and pepper spray got in my eyes and it was just like chili in my eyes. I told Susie what he was feeling and she went and got milk, we gave him some to drink and we bath him with it.

I told Susie to stop running water on him the chemical on his hair will keep going into his eyes so just to start to dry it away from his eyes.

I was so mad I went outside looking for him but didn't find him, then I got on the phone and called his supervisor and made a report and so far nothing. I really don't think they will do anything.

When I got back to my room Susie told me that she had opened the screen door to get the mail and Duncan ran out after the mailman and Susie after Duncan. Duncan ran 2 houses down and Susie was yelling at the mailman that he did bite he was just a puppy, but still the mailman sprayed him twice. Susie thinks that the first time he had missed and that is why he sprayed him again.

After he calm down we all took a 1 hour nap and when he woke up he was fine, oh I had also called the vet and looked in my first aid for dogs & cats book.

The book didn't have anything and the vet said that Duncan would been fine we did the right thing in washing it off and keeping him warm afterward, but I wasn't fine I was still mad and I even got mad at Susie for not being more careful knowing that this was not the first time Duncan has ran out.

Sometimes I feel I'm too over protective over these kids, but things like this make me this way and when someone does or says something mean about my spoiled kids I don't forgive.

Angry Oh Man!

That is completely unreal!!!! Even if your little boy DID bite him, it's not like your stupid mailman would have to go to the hospital!!!!!!!!! GEEZ!!!

I commend you on ALL the actions you took, and encourage you to also write a letter to your town postmaster. I also suggest you contact your local SPCA so they can get onto the jerk, too.

Poor little pup!!!

Oh my gosh!! What a jerk!!! Talk about being spray happy!! Could you imagine if he would have been carrying a gun!!!! Someone should spray him in the eyes!!! Like a yorkie could really hurt him! I would hunt him down! Or just be waiting for him next time you get mail!!!! I would give him a paice of my mind for sure!!!!!

Poor little Duncan, I'm so glad he's OK. Great work Mom & Susie , getting that stuff off. I agree with Jaspermom, write a letter, and add a picture too, they need to see what their Mailman was afraid of. Now I do understand why they have the spray, but Susie was there letting him know Duncan wouldn't bite.
I think Duncan should have extra treats today

Poor wee Duncan, I think that was a horrible thing to do to a little defenceless yorkie puppy. There should be some protcol, that mail men should have to follow, but if they spray a dog for no reason they should get a reprimand of some sort. I know what I would like to do to him!!!!

Oh wow. Big Brave mailman takes on 3 pound dog. Doesn't take much of a man to do that. The sad part is if you get on him, he can refuse to deliver your mail. So there's not a damned thing you can do.

Well..here goes. The mailman may have overreacted true, but your dog was running after him barking. Big, little, whatever I don't think the mailman thought at the time "Oh it's just a small yorkie, when it bites me it won't be too bad so I'll just let it happen." I have been in a situation where a small yorkie was jumping all over me and his owner was telling me not to worry he won't bite etc. Well, I don't know what ANY dog will do in ANY given situation. No one does!!! Dogs that haven't bitten EVER can bite all of a sudden. It really does no good to say to somone who's being chased or jumped on by your dog that's it's OK because they would never bite. It's simply not true. The reason your little one got pepper sprayed was human error on both parts it seems. The first part is that he was let out, even thought it wasn't intentional. The second part was that the mailman probably overreacted. I guess what I'm saying is that the mailman was not the only one to blame here. That being said I'm so glad your little one is ok...that must have been awful and I would have panicked. You and your daughter seemed like you kept your cool and did the right thing. Good for you.

She said that her daughter was partially to blame, but with that little dog, if the mailman had just turned and stomped his foot the dog would have run. I think mailmen need a few lessons from the dog whisperer on dealing with dogs.

That is really sad and I am so sorry to hear what happened today. Our mailwoman comes by and gives the dogs treats everyday, if they are not out she leaves the dog treats on the mailboxes. She even got my neighbor's lab to take a treat from her, and she DOES NOT trust people, she used to bark at her all the time, but now they bark because they want treats.
One day we had a different mailman come by. We have a duplex and the neighbor's lab stays in the front yard. The lab was barking at him and charged the gate and hit it with enough force to open it. My husband just happened to be getting home from work early and he stopped the mailman that was about to pepperspray her by getting between them and shutting the gate.
I understand why the mailman had his pepperspray out. He didn't know the dog and he did not want to wait to get bit first. I know it is hard to do, but we have to put ourselves in the mailperson's shoes and try to think what is going through their mind. They don't know these dogs and if they look like they are going to attack by barking and coming at you, then they have to do it to protect themselves. Although I don't entirely agree with him because your daughter was right there, but then again she didn't have control over the dog. I have heard that small dogs are more likely to be bitters. I don't think he did it just to be mean, at least I hope not. Some people are scared to death of dogs at any size. I really wish that he would not have sprayed your dog, that is so horrible for the little guy to go through. I wish there was some other way that was less painful for the dog. Is there anyway to get a dropbox mailbox, one closer to the street, or a fence around your yard? I hope he gets to feeling better. I also hope that your mailman apologized to your daughter for doing that infront of her.

This is so true and if they really want to make trouble for me they can refuse to deliver to my block. If I say something to him he can call the police on me.

So I just hope that his co-workers make fun of him until it makes him sick!!

Poor baby! How horrible. I make sure there is a section between my dogs and the front door. Just in case I had to open the door or someone came in, they will not be able to get out. But I am lucky my house has a certain layout that I can do that.

Give baby lots of hugs and kisses and keep baby away from the mailman!

I am so sorry your little baby had to go through that. I certainly hope he is fine from it all. I can't believe he was afraid of a little yorkie....Unreal.
My mail lady stops and comes over to pet mine sometimes and I live in the country so she parks her vehicle and gets out to love on them.
I would also be mad at Susie as just what if your baby ran in the road and got hit. Sometimes people don't understand you have to be very careful.
