I have been in a situation where a small yorkie was jumping all over me and his owner was telling me not to worry he won't bite etc. Well, I don't know what ANY dog will do in ANY given situation. No one does!!! Dogs that haven't bitten EVER can bite all of a sudden. It really does no good to say to somone who's being chased or jumped on by your dog that's it's OK because they would never bite. It's simply not true. The reason your little one got pepper sprayed was human error on both parts it seems. The first part is that he was let out, even thought it wasn't intentional. The second part was that the mailman probably overreacted. I guess what I'm saying is that the mailman was not the only one to blame here. That being said I'm so glad your little one is ok...that must have been awful and I would have panicked. You and your daughter seemed like you kept your cool and did the right thing. Good for you.
She said that her daughter was partially to blame, but with that little dog, if the mailman had just turned and stomped his foot the dog would have run. I think mailmen need a few lessons from the dog whisperer on dealing with dogs.
