That is really sad and I am so sorry to hear what happened today. Our mailwoman comes by and gives the dogs treats everyday, if they are not out she leaves the dog treats on the mailboxes. She even got my neighbor's lab to take a treat from her, and she DOES NOT trust people, she used to bark at her all the time, but now they bark because they want treats.
One day we had a different mailman come by. We have a duplex and the neighbor's lab stays in the front yard. The lab was barking at him and charged the gate and hit it with enough force to open it. My husband just happened to be getting home from work early and he stopped the mailman that was about to pepperspray her by getting between them and shutting the gate.
I understand why the mailman had his pepperspray out. He didn't know the dog and he did not want to wait to get bit first. I know it is hard to do, but we have to put ourselves in the mailperson's shoes and try to think what is going through their mind. They don't know these dogs and if they look like they are going to attack by barking and coming at you, then they have to do it to protect themselves. Although I don't entirely agree with him because your daughter was right there, but then again she didn't have control over the dog. I have heard that small dogs are more likely to be bitters. I don't think he did it just to be mean, at least I hope not. Some people are scared to death of dogs at any size. I really wish that he would not have sprayed your dog, that is so horrible for the little guy to go through. I wish there was some other way that was less painful for the dog. Is there anyway to get a dropbox mailbox, one closer to the street, or a fence around your yard? I hope he gets to feeling better. I also hope that your mailman apologized to your daughter for doing that infront of her.
