I found that their nosiness is stronger than their hardheadedness! If they won't come and I pretend to have something really interesting they'll come just to see what I have.

If all else fails I call one of the big dogs and they follow them. I don't really have to call them often because they are usually right up my butt!

Wow Kimberly, I did not realize you have 4 yorkies . . I am envious! I am getting a second one hopefully soon and already I am scared I might not do a good job at pleasing everyone (Tiger and the new memeber when she arrive and my hubby) and still attend to my daily chores. What is your secret?????

It's not just a yorkie thing. It's a terrier thing in general. I've owned many terriers in my day and they ALL have been stubborn and bad with the come command unless there is a treat in it for them. You just have to work that much harder with terriers is all.

Oversharer -- It's not a "terrier thing." It's a "small dog" thing. I would like to think it is only terriers, but in my neighborhood and among my friends, we have a PooPom, a Maltese, a daschund, a Yorkie, a Pom, and a couple other small dogs. Not one of them comes when you call them. They do turn around and look - but then just go on doing whatever they want to do.

And, as I mentioned earlier - everyone that has a large dog (larger breed) calls them and they run right to them. And - I want to add - not one of them trained their dogs to come....they have just all done it since they were pups...never a problem! Go figure!

My pup (6 months old) got out the front door tonight (on his own) for the first time. And - because there were so many people coming in - he just followed them - thank God! I can see me out chasing my dog in the dark. He's a dark color and doesn't show up!!

I was refering to the well known terrier stubborness. Saying it's a small dog thing is a little too open ended for my taste. I have (kinda) a dachshund and I lived with a chi/pom they both came automatically. The small dog thing I think comes from people's tendencies to pamper there small dogs and not treat them like big dogs. Big dogs are rough and hardy so we treat them that way. Small dogs can be very fragile, so we tend to pamper them. My sister has a GIANT lab and she never comes when called and my father has a australian cattledog who only comes once in awhile. Terriers are known for there independent and stubborn nature and I think it makes more sense to attribute the well noted behaviour of these yorkies to that as opposed to saying it's just because they're small.

Then again, we could both be wrong! Dogs never fail to surprise.

K.C. is never more than 1 foot from me and follows me everywhere I go. On the rare occasion if I look down and he's not at my feet, on my desk or on my lap, I get a little nervous and call to him and he comes running back!

Gracie only comes to:
"Did you miss momma?" when I say it in a high squeeky voice
and
"Get your butt over here before you get into trouble" ... that one makes her come running!!!

With our 2 Yorkies, they are not pampered. We give them love and pet them but we don't "pamper" them.

We don't do things when they ask. We do things for them when they've done something; i.e., sit, down, etc.

Even if they want to be petted, I tell them to "sit". Then I will pet the dog.

If you want your dog to come, you have to start out using a leash to teach it. You put your dog in a sit position and walk to the end of the leash and say the dog's name & "come". You praise the dog every step it takes. If the dog doesn't move toward you, just give a slight tug on the leash.

Practice and consistency is the name of the game in training your dog.

Don't ever give a command if you think the dog isn't going to obey it.

We never take our dogs out to go potty or for a walk without a leash.

If the dog is too involved in something, don't ask it to come to you. Go get the dog yourself. If you know it won't come, then don't ask it to come. All this works for us.

Good luck - always keep working with your pet at learning new things. It's good for bonding. It all isn't just about pampering your pet.

LOL Well I guess we all need to stop calling them because we know they aren't going to obey.

Oliie is just a baby so she comes now when I call her but not when my husband does. Our late Yorkie, Sparky, would come if she wanted too or if I used the "come here right now" tone of voice, well most of the time anyway. sometimes nothing worked.

Isn't that why we love them, for their spirit?

Most of the time he does but if I call him for a bath or bed time he runs with his tail between his legs and hides and we have to catch him!
