If you are Amish and are reading this, I appologize in advance. I live near a big Amish community and I am not even a tiny bit happy about the way they treat their animals. The ones I know are great people but still they do not have the same opinions about animals as most of us here do.

****** I am not in any way slandering the Amish! They are great folks. I buy flowers and veggies, etc. from them but would not support them in the way they raise dogs.

They have opened up one near Timonium stadium. I think they closed down the Amish market in Burtonsville.

How can he sell on the web if he doesn't have a computer? Those are internet sites only.

Yes, you are right. That's gotta be it. I just thought Amish don't use computers or telephone for that matter. In one of the ad on-line it says they don't have an e-mail address so "please call". I don't know any Amish personally so I don't really know how it works these days. I guess they do use the phone now. Sorry, I don't mean to be offensive here.

True Amish use no phone, no computers, not even ELECTRICITY!

Good luck finding one that isn't a puppymill. The media in our area often report on them because of all the problems associated with them. Being so close to PA we have lots of problems.

You might try a search on YT or even a Google search to get more info.

Good luck!

I can say that after speaking with someone who HAS been to an Amish Farm or Kennel or whatever they call them - and reading tons of information on the net about them - that they are MOSTLY ALL PUPPYMILLS !

Don't let a nice website fool you.

(how are they even on the net with no electricity ???) Oh Wait - it makes them MONEY so I guess they make an exception)

They believe dogs are no better than cattle and treat them like LIVESTOCK - leaving them outside in cages etc.

The Amish are VERY WELL KNOWN for having very bad conditions ....and IF I were you - I would stay WAY CLEAR of them.....I only say this to prevent you from heartbreak - I hope one day that they can ALL be shut down but that's just a nice dream and probably won't happen but if you buy a dog from them - then you are just keeping them in Business.....PLEASE think this through ...there are lots of good breeders out there that I'm sure you can find a nice yorkie thru and GOOD LUCK !!

Default Amish

The problem I had with the Amish is their thinking that dogs are no different then cows and horses. Living in unheated barns is a common practice, no grooming, no vet care at all. I don't talk about stuff I have not seen. I got so turned off to the Amish.

If this helps, I got my Jack from " AJJLSyorkshireterriers.com" a breeder in Milan, Ohio. her name is Amy, I found her on Breeders.net. I see she has some puppies available. I've had Jack for a year now and I'm very happy.

I thank you all very much for taking the time to respond. As of this morning my wife proclaimed that we are not going. And probably like all of you, she lets herself get all excited and worked up before she thinks she is getting a new family member, so now she is a little let down.

When you call Wayne, you will never get an answer or an answering machine. You will however always get a call back....Which tells us perhaps his phone is somewhere else with caller id?

After the help here and a little internet sleuthing, things do not add up. But, when does an animal lover draw the line between "supporting" a puppy mill and "resecuing" an animal from bad conditions and hoping for no health problems?

What a good question.

My only answer is you are taking a chance ....I saw that someone did get a puppy that is healthy - but in reality - most puppy mill puppies are NOT....you can read on the net for much more information but unless you find a very good breeder - you will take a chance that you may have health problems in the future....

Most mills and Pet Stores provide MINIMAL vet care and in some cases NONE. At many mills - puppies are infested with parasites or worse...they get sold to Pet Stores....many times the puppies are sick & die on the way to the Pet Store - the ones that make it...who ALSO may be sick...get Minimal or NO vet care there also. It's HORRIBLE and far more common than people realize.

It hurts to see puppies in bad conditions and we WANT to rescue them - but it hurts them ALL in the long run....when one is purchased - they have to replace it and the cycle continues....

The torture and abuse STARTS at the Puppy Mill...make no mistake about that....for the few and far between Semi-HUMANE Mills - there are many many horrible evil torture chamber type mills in this country. The bad ones are way too prevalant in this country so in order to stop this practice - they ALL NEED TO BE SHUT DOWN

During these auctions the dogs and pups are stacked high on semis in freezing cold weather just waiting for their moment to go on the auction block to the highest bidder. Often there are picketers there.

It is all about the money to them, not the dog, or the standard the dog should be, or how the mothers are treated, bred every heat cycle, till they can produce no more, and are then killed or die on their own, or they are sold at a discount!

Please research this on the net, there are SO many article including pictures, that you can not even fathom. I went to a breeder, in Holmes county to try to see what I could, needless to say he did not let me in the HUGE pole barn where the dogs were, he had 10 breeds listed in his ad, in the Bargain Hunter, which is full of ads they place every week. He wanted 1,000 for a male and 1,200. for a female, I asked, if I was going to pay that kind of money I need to see how they live and their parents,, he said, He couldn't because his wife wasn't home... What?! Anyhow, I spoke my mind to him, and left. He still has an ad in every week.

My neighbor bought a Boston Terrier from the Amish, she has over 8,000 in vet bills and the dog is 2 years old, bad breeding.

Please Dont buy from the Amish. Please.
Reading this makes me physically ill-naucious
