Anyone ever buy from an Amish breeder? Hello folks. My wife is a beginning breeder with a mentor and has been recentely looking for another female to add to our family. While trying to avoid all of the scammers out there, she saw an add in our local paper (ohio) and we plan to visit the breeder tommorow.(2 1/2 hour drive each way) I asked my wife if he could send us photos first so we have an idea if at least visually it was something she was looking for. Come to find out this man has no computer and is Amsih. This got me to thinking... Any experiences with this? Anything to look out for? The thought of taking care of yorkies without modern conveniences or perhaps electricity depending on the sect makes me nervous. Or am I worrying for nothing? http://www.newyorkies.net |
No way they are puppymillers! |
My parents got their lab from an amish family. They raised yellow labs. Izzy (the dog) is the sweetest animal with the best disposition! I don't know if they did a good job with her or she was from a great back ground...probably both, but I only have positive things to say about that experience with the amish. Good luck to you and your wife! |
The Amish are running some of the biggest puppy mills in the country. http://www.geocities.com/Petsburgh/F...uppymills.html http://www.charityadvantage.com/njca...Connection.asp http://www.greatdreams.com/eeyore/puppymls.htm http://www.wkyc.com/news/news_fullstory.asp?id=35435 Run in the other direction. |

Google "Amish and puppymill" and see what you come up with. |
Well this pretty much sums up my suspicions......and not in the good way either. :( I try to learn as much as I can about my wifes passion and support her in any way I can, so I am glad I followed my hunch and asked here.(she has an account here but her password is not working) The exact breeder is outside of Wooster Oh if that rings any bells with anyone. |
Believe me when you get there, if you go, YOU will know, SO many out there are puppy mills, I know I live min's away from them, and have witnessed them, and done everything in my power to stop what they are doing. There is a Holmes County Auction every Sat, where they auction off their PRODUCTS, there have been letters written ( including mine) to our local paper trying to bring about awareness of what they are doing. During these auctions the dogs and pups are stacked high on semis in freezing cold weather just waiting for their moment to go on the auction block to the highest bidder. Often there are picketers there. It is all about the money to them, not the dog, or the standard the dog should be, or how the mothers are treated, bred every heat cycle, till they can produce no more, and are then killed or die on their own, or they are sold at a discount! Please research this on the net, there are SO many article including pictures, that you can not even fathom. I went to a breeder, in Holmes county to try to see what I could, needless to say he did not let me in the HUGE pole barn where the dogs were, he had 10 breeds listed in his ad, in the Bargain Hunter, which is full of ads they place every week. He wanted 1,000 for a male and 1,200. for a female, I asked, if I was going to pay that kind of money I need to see how they live and their parents,, he said, He couldn't because his wife wasn't home... What?! Anyhow, I spoke my mind to him, and left. He still has an ad in every week. My neighbor bought a Boston Terrier from the Amish, she has over 8,000 in vet bills and the dog is 2 years old, bad breeding. Please Dont buy from the Amish. Please. |

Do you have the name of the breeder? Here is a list of breeders who have been suspended by AKC. http://www.yorkietalk.com/forums/forumdisplay.php?f=9 |
While it is true that most amish "breeders" are actually puppymillers, I just wanted to mention that there is an amish breeder in my area who isn't. |

Amish We had a number of Amish farmers in Maryland where I lived. I used to go to the Farmers market and can not tell you how awful these animals are treated..not just dogs. I couldn't stand to see the rabbits and chickens abused, let alone the puppies that were sold there..some dogs went their entire life and never had a bath..can you believe it? |
Well my wife received a call after this thread and he says he breeds yorkies and chih-tzu's.... His name is Wayne Weaver from Fredericksburg. |
Hi and welcome to YorkieTalk. You are smart to research the breeder before you go but I just wanted to say that I don't think it would be fair for us to generalize and say that "ALL" amish people are puppymillers. We would not want to be judged that way. I think it is fair to point out that you need to be careful and there apparently are a lot of Amish who people think are puppymills but a lot of people also have different definitions and connotations when they use the word puppymill. You may want to ask some questions before you drive that far to see if it is what you are interested in. It may save you long drive. I hope you find out more now that you have his name. Good luck and let us know how it all works out. |
While it is true that not EVERY amish breeder is a puppymiller, it's safe to say that finding one that is not will be difficult. Please do what you can to find out about them before making the trek...save yourself time and gas money. Best of luck and let us know what you find out. :) |
