| Is it safe to have an exterminator spray in our house? We recently acquired a population of pantry moths in our house. We tried to take care of it ourselves and sprayed stuff in our pantry, but they are still there. The pantry is a separate room in our house, so we were able to keep our dogs out and away from the pesticide. Anyway, we have called an exterminator to come out and take care of the moths since our method didn't work. The problem is that the exterminator wants to do the whole house, not just the pantry. Has anyone else had their house sprayed, and do you know if it's safe for the dogs to be around? We've read that as long as you keep them off the treated areas until the stuff dries, it's okay. The exterminator also says that it's safe for pets. Has anyone heard otherwise?

| Hmmmm....I can't help you there....but we have used the house foggers before (put all the food, doggie stuff, etc. in the shop building....and the set them off in the house. We normally go camping or something with Mojo. (Set the foggers off on Friday and come back Sunday). When we get back, one of us stays in the motorhome or outside with him...while the other two frantically clean EVERYTHING. (most dishes and extra linens are put in the shop before we go, so we just have to wash the bedding that is on the bed when we left). The floors get swept and mopped, counters, etc get dusted and cleaned. Maybe we are not doing the right thing, but that is what we always do.....Hope it helps.......I would like to know what everyone else thinks too.

| We spray the boutique and groom shop once a month. You HAVE to do it on a day when your dogs will not be home and won't be in the area sprayed for 4-5 hours. It is IMPORTANT the solution fully dries before you allow your animals back in the house. So yes, it is safe to do your house, but make sure your babies aren't there and won't be there for four hours afterwards.

| Thanks for the advice! We're now thinking that we'll have the exterminator come in the morning and we'll let our little guys spend the day in doggie day care until we can pick them up after work. That should give the stuff plenty of time to dry up before we all get home. And of course, they'll get plenty of arm and lap time that night.

| I may be a little late with my response but here goes. My hubby is a firefighter here but on his days off, he is a "bug man". Whenever he gets ready to treat our house, he makes me take the babies elsewhere for a couple hours and when he treats the yard for ticks and fleas, they aren't allowed outside for a few hours (try getting them to pee on command..LOL!). You are doing the right thing by taking your baby out of the environment until all is clear Great question by the way! |

Donating YT 10K Club Member | We had the pantry moths. You don't have to spray to get rid of them. Our exterminator put a sticky thing in the cabinet. It's treated with some kind of moth endrophine. Got rid of them. When he sprays the house, he just tells us not to let Trace sniff it or walk in it for a couple of hours. We usually just go outside.

| Please, Please, make sure your babies are not there when they spray. When my children were home they had a Peruvian guinea pig. It was a little long hair guinea pig that looked like a little dust mop. I had the exterminator come and spray and specifically asked him if it would harm our little pet. He assured me it wouldn't. He came while I was at work and when I got home the guinea pig was dead. I called the exterminator and he assured me it died of something else. I told him not to come back even tho we had a contract for a spraying monthly for a year. We got another guinea pig and he came and sprayed again and killed it even though I had told him not to come back. (We live in a small town and my house was never locked) I called the State agency responsible for licensing the exterminators and turned them in. They did come and investigate. The moral of the story, DO NOT believe them when they tell you it is not harmful to pets. It may not be for the bigger ones but it could be for our little Yorkies. |

| Thanks again everyone. bchgirl - we tried the traps, too, but they just weren't effective. I read somewhere that they only catch 1 in 8 of the moths, and from our experience, that's about right. I'm glad they worked for you, though! Anyway, we called the exterminator again this morning and got rescheduled for a morning appointment, and Fang and Errol will be spending the entire day at doggie day care (which may be nearly as deadly, due to total exhaustion, LOL). The exterminator assured us again that the dogs could stay in the house the entire time, but we just don't believe him. Better safe than sorry!

| When I lived in California - fleas were the worst problem in the world for pet owners. Many people with pets had their houses (indoors and out) sprayed monthly. Check with an exterminator - they can certainly tell you about their different products and how they affect animals. They're the experts. If you're worried, check with a couple of different companies. I do know that there are many different products they use - for different reasons. Carol Jean |

| We have our house sprayed every two months. I think it just depends on what they use. I keep my pets put up for approx 2-3 hours after they spray. We had guinea pigs, a cat and a dog and have had no problems. Our "bugman" also has a small yorkie and he says that it is safe just keep them out of it for a couple of hours.
