When I lived in California - fleas were the worst problem in the world for pet owners.
Many people with pets had their houses (indoors and out) sprayed monthly.
Check with an exterminator - they can certainly tell you about their different products and how they affect animals. They're the experts. If you're worried, check with a couple of different companies. I do know that there are many different products they use - for different reasons.
