| Vets that have mandatory nutter/spay policy I was watching Dr. Jeff Rocky Mountain Vet on YouTube and on the episode it mentioned that they have a policy that all animals that come to their clinic must be spayed/neutered. If they do a surgery and the animal is still intact they perform the procedure. I am in favor of this as I believe in spaying/neutering however I never heard of this at a vet clinic before. I know my vet does not have this policy. I was wondering what others opinions were on when this topic when a vet demands that all animals they see must adhere to this policy. They work in a low income area so I don't think they treat a lot of reputable breeders (but that is only my guess) Ashley

| Well I think that since its in a low income area that its a good idea honestly. A regular vet I'm not sure if that would fly or not. At the end of the day here if you don't like the polices at one vet you would just move to the next.

| I agree with this assessment. Most come to this place for surgeries it looks like because they cost less than other places

| I have never heard of a vet insisting / demanding any dog they treat must be spayed or neutered. I am all for spay and neutering for eliminating health issues down the road especially with intact females. If this vet spays or neuters while he is performing a surgery I hope he gives a big discount for that procedure especially if he is located in a low income area, ppl in low income don't have money to spay or neuter, and most likely why their dogs are not fixed. I am sure in a low income area his fees must be very reasonable, if he is, a lot of ppl will use him and will do the procedure, that's a sure fire way to get these dogs fixed.

| I've watched Dr Jeff's programs and yes, he works in low income areas where dogs are in abundance. I appreciate his willingness to go to these areas and spay and neuter the dogs that need it. I've seen shows where he went to Mexico and did this at no charge to help reduce the population of dogs that have no owners. |

| A big nope for me. I would not let them spay or neuter my dog before a certain age but I am not a fan of pediatric altering. But I also am not seeking low-cost services personally and Dr. Jeff does a lot of services for cheap or for free to help out those who need the services so I appreciate where he is coming from. It just wouldn't be my preference for vet care but I am grateful that I have that choice.

There are lots of good reasons to alter animals. There are also (rarely) good reasons not to. Pediatric altering is something I would never allow for my pets. Based on information from the Americans College of Theriogenologists, I decided to have my Boxer spayed at 1 year instead of 6 months. Sex hormones play an important role in development. I think Dr. Jeff is a great person who does so much good for animals. That said, I would not go to a vet with such blanket policies. All dogs are different. And in all honestly, the standard of care at his practice is way below anything I would consider acceptable for my pets.

WELL SAID! I do NOT like this pushing of surgeries! And where I live; this is still AMERICA, where people (of all incomes) are suppose to be FREE to chose! I am NOT for altering animals just to alter them. Saying that it is for health reasons and taking their organs is like saying if Humans had one lung removed they would be 50% less likely to have Lung Cancer. Then lining us all up for surgery we do not need. | |

I watch the show and enjoy it. I think he has all good intentions and it's great for the folks who otherwise wouldn't receive care for their pets but it's not the standard I would prefer for my animals. I also agree with larger breeds waiting until at least 1 year to alter. Goldens I'd probably wait until closer to 2. I JUST saw the episode last night where he had a 4 month old Basset puppy in for an obstruction and he neutered him because he said "all patients that come through this door are required to be S/N before they leave" or something to that nature. I just don't agree with an animal who has already been through something physically traumatic and then neutering them right away? No. I also hate when I see animals right out of surgery just chilling on the ground on a towel - not in a cage, etc. I think it used to be done due to their lack of space which, fine, I get. And some dogs would be fine with this. But I don't know... I just... don't feel comfortable with it. At least he's significantly better than Dr Pol.
