| I changed my dog's name when he was 6 years old, in fact I have changed it 2 times, once when he was 3 1/2 and again when he was 6, he is now 7 years old. It took him about 3 weeks to know what his new name was. My kid is a rescue, I didn't like the name he had, since he was an unplanned rescue, a gift to me from my vet I had no name selected, I wanted his original name changed before I left my vet the day I took him home, since he was going to be my buddy that's what I changed it to, anyone I ran into, ppl I didn't even know were calling him Buddy, I realized that's what ppl call dogs when they don't know what it's name is, so a year after me calling him Buddy I changed it, so, actually his name has been changed 4 times. It is harder on us when we change names, you have to be very careful to not use the old name when you have to call him fast lol.

| I was told her name was 'Dark Night'---uh? Really? On our drive home I looked down at her little face looking up at me and just knew she was Piper. I was at my vet's first thing next morning to have her checked for a microchip. Because, I mean, who names their pet Dark Night? After four years, she still tries the ol' "Oh, were you calling me? So I guess I'm Piper today, too?" Little monkey!! 'Oh, am I to understand you're speaking to me?' |

| Joan is right. Because humans rely on the spoken language, a name change is harder on us than the furkid. Especially when you really need to remember . Dogs, on the other hand, communicate primarily through body language and scent, not the spoken language. As long as the name change is associated with "happy" then it shouldn't take long at all to learn a new name. After all most of our furkids respond to a multitude of names - my Lollieop responds equally to being called Lollie, LaLa, Lollers, Pretty Girl, and of course the universal "name" Wanna Treat? |

| It's not generally a big deal. Unless puppies I normally kept all the rescues we had with the same name except Penny because I absolutely hated her name. She kinda picked her name though, we were calling out names in the car and she reacted to Penny. We rescued a lab mix when I was 8 and her name was Hank, they thought she was a boy but we just kept it.

| This dog is five and has the original name of one of my adopted sons. So.......I really think it needs to be changed. Thanks for all your encouragement. |

| Emma’s Knick name is Beary or Bear so I agree that as long as it’s happy , do consistency and keep your scent you should be good. Maltese that’s an interesting story about your name changes .
