Name change at five How hard is it to change a dog’s name at five? Is it fair to do? Gew |
I changed my dog's name when he was 6 years old, in fact I have changed it 2 times, once when he was 3 1/2 and again when he was 6, he is now 7 years old. It took him about 3 weeks to know what his new name was. My kid is a rescue, I didn't like the name he had, since he was an unplanned rescue, a gift to me from my vet I had no name selected, I wanted his original name changed before I left my vet the day I took him home, since he was going to be my buddy that's what I changed it to, anyone I ran into, ppl I didn't even know were calling him Buddy, I realized that's what ppl call dogs when they don't know what it's name is, so a year after me calling him Buddy I changed it, so, actually his name has been changed 4 times. It is harder on us when we change names, you have to be very careful to not use the old name when you have to call him fast lol. |
1 Attachment(s) I was told her name was 'Dark Night'---uh? Really? On our drive home I looked down at her little face looking up at me and just knew she was Piper. I was at my vet's first thing next morning to have her checked for a microchip. Because, I mean, who names their pet Dark Night? After four years, she still tries the ol' "Oh, were you calling me? So I guess I'm Piper today, too?" Little monkey!! 'Oh, am I to understand you're speaking to me?' |

It's not generally a big deal. Unless puppies I normally kept all the rescues we had with the same name except Penny because I absolutely hated her name. She kinda picked her name though, we were calling out names in the car and she reacted to Penny. We rescued a lab mix when I was 8 and her name was Hank, they thought she was a boy but we just kept it. |
This dog is five and has the original name of one of my adopted sons. So.......I really think it needs to be changed. Thanks for all your encouragement. |

Emma’s Knick name is Beary or Bear so I agree that as long as it’s happy , do consistency and keep your scent you should be good. Maltese that’s an interesting story about your name changes . |
I had a terrier mutt named Cricket. I called her Cricket, Crickle Bean and Beanie...she answered to them all |
