| Barney was attacked The last two years have been wild. I’ve been out of pocket and haven’t posted much. However yesterday my neighbors dog, a white German Shepherd, ran into our yard and attacked Barney while he was going pee. We immediately drove him to en emergency vet, which is about an hour from home. We had to wait another hour to see her. By the time they got him in, he was starting to go into shock. She put him on an iv to stabilize him and then stitched him up and sent him home last night. He has been lethargic since. He has eaten some but not pooped. He has also been drinking and has peed several times. Peeing is a nightmare because he will only go in the grass and our neighbors are still allowing their dog to run off leash. We are going back to the vet this afternoon. It appears his hind leg is broken. I am just heart broken and would love to hear from anyone whose been through this that he will be ok. |

| I have not been through this but I am so sorry for your pain. I can't imagine how much it must hurt to see your baby in pain. We will pray for a quick recovery for Barney.

| Call the police ASAP as well as animal control. I am sooooo sorry this is so terrible. Your neighbors should by law be required to pay the vet bills. You also might want to look into leash laws in your county and they may be fined for that as well. It’s horrible when your own pup cannot be safe in their yard.

I'm heartbroken to learn that you and Barney are going through this trauma and hope the return visit to the vet brings you some comfort. You guys are in my thoughts and prayers. I have not had an experience like this with a yorkie, but earlier thread on YorkieTalk has posts by members whose pups have so suffered. See "Broken Leg?" started by milomlo. Milomlo was given the option of surgery or casting--went with casting. As long as I was able to follow the op on that thread, seems her little one faired well without surgery. There are other threads, but see also post by Schmidtey, "Broken leg may need metal plate ...." from 2015. Schmidtey opted for what was a very tricky surgery. The last I was able to follow the pups progress, was doing well. | |

| P.S. Have your considered getting one of those artificial grass topped doggie potties? https://www.amazon.com/Ideas-Life-Po.../dp/B01GW5OYBC |

| If you live in a community where dogs are required to be on a leash or chained up (not allowed to run free), I'd call animal control on your neighbor. You should not have to live in fear of the neighbor's dog. Other than that, Barney should be able to make a quick recovery from his injuries (I hope his leg isn't broken). Are there any regular vets closer to your location? An hour seems a long way to drive.

| Our neighbor is a policeman. I’m not sure about this dog. It is an adult but has only been there a few weeks. The neighbor has been super nice and has offered to pay Vet bills. However, he makes nothing and has a wife and young baby. He has out of town in laws visiting and I think the dog is theirs. I think the intention was they were going to leave the dog with my neighbor. I know that he has told them several times to not let the dog outside off leash. The problem is that when he’s not home, his in laws are letting the dog run loose. I yelled at it today saying I was going to shoot it (I won’t). But a man was standing in the yard and I did it for his ears. I leave for the Vet in about an hour. I am hoping Barney starts to show improvement. Right now he is lethargic. His right front leg was ripped from his rib cage to his spine. The vet said she could see his ribs. His right hind leg has a large wound also but it’s not as deep. This is the one that appears to be broken. I ache. |

| Sounds like the in laws should be the ones who have to pay but I would bet that they are the type sitting there somehow putting the blame on you and Barney.

| We are home. His leg is fine. As a matter of fact he walked around perfectly at the vets. But it was good we went in. His lung is punctured and leaking air into his chest. So she wrapped him. She said it will heal on it’s in but to keep him calm. He is acting much more normal this evening. Perhaps it just took time to let the anesthesia wear off. We go back Thursday to check on lungs. It looks like we got really lucky. |
