Default Shampoo for allergies???

I could use a little help. Coco is on apoquel due to grass allergies. She has really dry skin. For the past 4 months we have noticed that she really stinks just a few days after bathing. I have used Neem shampoo in the past and it was working great, but not any more. She still itches and she stinks just a few days after bathing. Even after coming home from the groomer. Well, after much frustration, I took her to the vet about the continual itching and he recommended Sebazole. We did that for a while for the itching but the stink is still going on. I read an article about a shampoo called Moosh. Does any one have thouhts/experience about this shampoo??? Also, what about the Yirkie Splash and Shine???? Keep in mind her allergies.

We are both crazy for help!!!
Than you so much

Sebazole is a medicated shampoo for the treatment of skin infections due to bacteria, yeast, or fungi. See: https://www.virbac.com.au/home/dog-c...e-shampoo.html

I fear that the stink on your dog's skin won't go away until the underlying condition is treated. If you are going to stop the Sebazole, you should let your veterinarian know what is going on, since that might be part of your dog's medical treatment.

You need to find out what is causing the stink and treat that not just cover it up. I use hylyt shampoo and conditioner on my girl with allergies.

Thank you for your thoughts. The Sebazole was actually just his recommendation. He said that in his opinion it was one of the best medicated shampoos for dogs with itchy/dry skin. I originally bought Natures Specialties Neem shampoo for her about 4 years ago that was suggested by my groomer. This was after we had allergy testing done by the vet. Coco was adopted by us when she was three years old and immediately we discovered she had some itching problems which we quickly took her to the vet to get to the bottom of it. The vet put her on Apoquel. She has been on this for 4 years now but the stinky body has just developed within the last several months. She is normally given a bath every 7-10 days and groomed every 5 weeks because we keep her short.

This is something I read:
Skin conditions such as dry, irritated skin (sometimes due to allergies) can trigger the body to produce more oil than normal, and therefore without a few extra baths with a quality product that is both moisturizing and protecting, an odor can begin to build up.

Hopefully, we can get it figured out.

Absolutely agree with you. I wondered if maybe due to using the medicated shampoo so much that maybe I need a good moisturizing conditioner or maybe some type of spritz for the in between bath times. Maybe this is a medical condition that has just popped up on us.

Thank you

Default Shampoo

We use Earth Bath non-scented hypoallergenic shampoo and conditioner. She tolerates it very well, it doesn't overstrip so that the body wants to over produce oil, and her bath lasts about a week. By 10 days she feels icky! A lot of sources say to only bath every three weeks, but if we do that she's itchy and irritable.

The key we found was in the rinsing and water temperature. Measure water temperature on the inside of your wrist and it should not feel warm. It's cooler than people like, but it's good for dry, itchy skin on yorkies. And rinse way more than you think is needed. Don't blow dry as that is very drying to the skin.

Also, if you need a finishing spray, spritz it onto your hands and gently apply to the hair, not the skin.

We had a mini-dachshund that would smell bad if her anal glands were plugged. Her ears could also smell bad if we didn't stay on it. We've been lucky not to have a dog with bad breath - yet. lol

Hope you solve the problem!

It's fine to bathe them weekly as long as your using a good shampoo. My vet actually wants me to bathe Callie weekly. When we had beagles growing up they got a bath only twice a year lol.

Have you fully inspected her skin, everywhere...? Anything unusual?

I guess if it truly smells this bad, I'd ask to do a skin scraping and then grow it out in culture for 14 days to look for fungus/yeast.

Has seborrhea been ruled out?

Are there any signs of hypothyroidism? Anytime there are unresolved skin/hair issues -- you MUST look deeper, bc these are just symptoms of something else.

And most importantly...is she not getting enough relief from the Atopica? If not, the dose can be increased and given 2x a day, rather than just once a day. You should also talk to your vet about the new shot for allergies, Cytopoint.

No mention ever of seborrhea. Only allergies to all grasses where we live. No allergies to foods. Her prescription is 5.4mg of apoquel. Half a tablet every 24 hrs. The vet did tell me at one time that when her scratching was in overdrive that I could give her a full tablet. She also has a dandruff due to the dry skin. Yesterday, I mad her an appointment with the vet so we can hopefully get this resolved. I will ask about the shot.

THank you so much for the extra info.
