Wow, that is crazy! I read older stories on YT about people trying to take Yorkies from the owners' arms. Haven't heard one in a while. It's ridiculous how crazy people are!

You might want to tell your daughter to have her phone handy to take a quick photo of the car before it leaves. But most importantly, to be careful for her own safety too. Really glad to hear Chewy and daughter are both okay.

Mmm yeah that sucks and makes me nervous... I am a guy, but maybe I should carry pepper spray myself just in case. Yeah, would be nice if she knew self-defense... even the most basic self defense can be useful at times. Even in a peaceful neighborhood things can always happen.

You know, if she took her cellphone and started to record the event that would be clear cut proof of what happened should the attacker claim otherwise... Really it's all about keeping her and the pup safe, but I guess taking out your phone would be a good deterrent.

I hope it doesn't happen to her, you or anyone ever again it's rather sad that someone would do that.

This is so scary!! Kaji was taken from my property not long ago by "well wishing neighbors" Kaji was sunbathing, on my property, with my brother watching him while he worked, but was but out of view of people. The neighbors grabbed Kaji because they thought he was lost (again, from MY PROPERTY) and of course my brother got Kaji right back.

I can't believe how insanely bold and brazen people are. Stealing a pup from a little girl? That's insane!!! I'm glad both your daughter and your pup are ok

Was thinking more about this situation and I think your daughter screaming was the best approach. I wouldn't suggest that she pull out the cellphone until the person was walking away and at a safe distance.

Sometimes, in this day n age, you never know. A cell phone in that person's face could trigger something else, putting your daughter in danger. Heck even if it were me, I wouldn't - I'm a wimp and couldn't take on any one. I would have screamed too. A screaming deterrent is better than instigating confrontation.

Do you have a military surplus store near you? If so, see if they have a personal sized can of OC spray. It's what the military uses and most police departments and is much stronger than normal civilian pepper spray you can buy on the internet.

Teach your daughter to yell "fire" if anyone approaches her again. Sometimes people won't intervene when they hear "help" or a scream because they subconsciously connect it with playing around or a non-emergency, but almost everyone will run towards the location that someone is yelling "fire."

If your daughter has a cell phone make sure it has a tracking app that you can find her through on it. You never know, the lady might try to grab her too next time. Also, post an ad on craigslist or in the local newspaper about what happened. This woman might have done it before and maybe someone has a description of her.

Confused

Do any of the stores have security cameras???????
I would go look as some of them tape over rather quickly. It might help.
Your daughter is a brave and smart young lady.
I would a suggest bear spray, with training of course.

Sorry you all are going through this.

We do have mace- but It's in storage and heaven knows if it's good or what. I'll look for the bear spray or Military surplus store. The cameras- well, for those of us from AZ, we live in a weird Area. Stapley and University in Mesa. I'm sure you understand that just a few miles away it's NOT a good neighborhood, but we are in a good one. They have them, but she caught E as she was going around the parking lot to take the sidewalk; so I'm not sure that the cameras picked it up. However, I will be calling on Monday to see. Police haven't had anything reported on any one like this, or an incident like this. I'm sure dog snatching, but they specifically said this type of a situation with the description given. I can ask again if there is anything with different wording.

Thank you for all your kind words.

Just seeing this! How close a call was that with your daughter and your baby?!?!? So glad both are safe! Anyone THAT bold and lack of judgment could have hurt your daughter just to get the dog! I'm SO relieved it ended well but golly, who would think somebody would take such a huge chance in public? Hopefully she didn't go on further away and successfully steal her a dog from an owner who'd turned away or was on a cane or something! What a horrible person so self-absorbed that she doesn't care about stealing another's beloved dog!!!

First Christmas I had Tibbe, he was outside in the cold weather going potty & I had come inside where it was warm to watch him through the big den windows until he was done. A car came slowly down the alley and reappeared a couple mins. later, stopped by my back fence with all 4 adults in the car smiling out at Tibbe. Suddenly two adults got out, I got up and started toward the den door and the two were approaching my boat gate latch just as I got through the den, utility room and out the back door, yelling all the while as Tibbe was coming toward me. They looked at me, turned and quickly scurried into the back seat of the car and the driver floored it! I have no doubt they were going to try to take my Tibbe right out of his own yard. And I don't doubt they could easily see me sitting beside the big window when they decided to stop! UGH! Horrible dog thieves!!!

OH my gosh!!! That made my stomach drop for you! Also makes me boiling angry. I can just see Tibbe wagging his tail and being sweet. It's this reason why I feel people who do this, or abuse animals are just the lowest of scums. It's the sweet and gentle way they look at the world; they are so trusting.

Resale value on a Yorkie is anywhere from $350.00-800.00. Watch your pups, as people are ALWAYS trying to make a quick buck. Dont leave your dog unattended, anyplace, for even a minute....dont let "adoring fans" hold or cuddle with your dog, as they can easily snatch baby right from your grasp....As much as I hate to do it, I always think of anyone that comes up to my baby in public, as a potential kidnapper, looking for a quick buck.....NO ONE IS ALLOWED TO GET WITHIN ARMS LENGTH OF MY PUPS....I just say she may bite as she does not know strangers.....

Amen! An ounce of prevention, better safe than sorry...One night a (very tall) young girl reached down to pet Piper and before I knew it she picked her up! Piper squirmed out of her grasp and dropped to concrete floor. Thank God in Heaven above that Piper didn't get hurt, but soooo easily could have suffered major physical trauma. I, too, am now very guarded with Piper. If someone wishes to pet her, she is in my arms. And though Piper is permitted to walk up to a person, I never take my eyes off of her for one second--and we don't linger! So sad, but so very true that in this day and age, no one is to be trusted--not until they've proven they can be...A nice, pleasant-looking stranger can easily be a lowdown thug. I'll error on the side of caution and risk slighting someone before risking Piper. Oops, kinda went on and on...

I wanted to thank you, because I don't have any doubt you're the reason why Chewie stayed safe that day. I remembered your story, and I don't let any one leave with chewie either on the leash double wraped on the wrists, or in her bag without a hand on it, and eyeballs firmly on her- nor is ANY one ever allowed to hold her. I've even put up with nasty comments saying no. I've stuck to my guns. I'm short and I have that aura that people will just come right up, so the arms length I'm working on. I think I'll do the she bites soon.
