| Indoor 2 male Yorkies....9 year old and 5 year old Hi Everyone....I'm new to this! I'm a grandmother to two male Yorkies. There used to be only one and because my son and daughter-in-law work long hours, they got a second male Yorkie. The first Yorkie was great they said, would only pee on wee wee pads and never mark inside. They brought in a new puppy who is now 5 years old and never stopped marking on furniture and walls, although would pee on the wee wee pads. We noticed that the older Yorkie picked up the bad habit of marking from the younger Yorkie. They now have kids, and the Yorkie's no longer get the attention they used to get. Also, because of the marking, they no longer have access to the whole house when they are left alone and no longer sleep in bed with my son and daughter-in-law because of the marking. I walk the dogs during the day, since they work long hours and when I come inside the house, I see that probably the younger Yorkie (5 year old) peed on the leg of the dining table instead of the wee wee pad. I thought maybe this particular Yorkie prefers peeing on a vertical post instead of a flat pad. I put a pad where he peed on the leg of the table bc I thought that maybe he would get used to doing this on the pad instead, but besides doing it on the pad, he would also marked and peed elsewhere.....chair legs. I read to maybe get a 2 liter bottle and place it in the middle of a pad and hopefully the vertical item will help with the one Yorkie to pee on the bottle. They are locked up in the kitchen when the owners are gone, so they can't mark in the rest of the house and pee too. HELP HELP!! |

| Well, I have 3 males that also mark everywhere so can understand how frustrating it can be. What we do when we want to let the dogs have access in the whole house is to use belly bands. It has really saved my furniture and our 12 yr. old still gets to sleep with us. I use nursing pads with the bands to help absorb the urine. I also have a small milk jug that they can use on the pad, it really helps to give them something to lift their legs on and they get lots of praise for using it. Of course you don't want to leave the bands on 24/7 but it has really worked for us so our boys don't have to be stuck in the kitchen all the time. |

| Thanks for your resonse The problem is that the two dogs are left in the kitchen area from 8:00 am - 5:30 pm and then again when the owners go to sleep. The younger Yorkie (5 yrs.) doesn't only mark, but uses the furniture to pee on, besides the once in a while pad. The problem with the belly band is that they are a lone too long. I bought different products for clean up and also to spray the pad so the scent makes them want to pee on it, but I still found urine under the table legs. The younger one even has a bowel movement on the floor instead of the pad. The owners don't want to deal with it anymore, but I still want to try. Thanks! |

| Welcome to Yorkie Talk. Are both of the dogs neutered? You are wonderful for walking the dogs and taking such an active interest in them. I have 2 boys who are pad and outdoor trained. The older one has been a leg lifter from the time he was a pup, although he always went to the pad. For him, moving the pad away from vertical surfaces solved that problem. He still lifts a foot, but doesn't do a full vertical lift. Praising and rewarding for going to the pad I believe has kept my boys successful pad users. I understand that you aren't there 24 hours a day, but maybe you can convince your son and daughter-in-law to help in the training that way. I give my boys 2 kibble pieces for every trip to the pad, so they milk it for all it is worth. Cleaning up the accident spots with an enzyme cleaner to remove the scent is also essential so that the dog isn't encouraged to return and mark the spot again. Belly bands as suggested above are another option. Those take work too though to change and keep the skin clean and dry to prevent skin problems. Some dogs learn not to go while they are wearing them.

| My grand Yorkies Thanks for responding. Yes, they are both neutered. Also, I did clean the area with a special but that didn't stop them from urinating in the same area. Major if the time when they owe we don't see it in order to praise them. The older one does use it but he marks the furniture where the younger Yorkie peed. It's already become a habit bc they've been doing it for quite a while. The owners only priority now are the kids, so they won't put the effort needed. I will just keep trying different suggestions that you all gave me and hope for the best. Thanks so much! |

Furbutts = LOVE Donating Member Moderator | I feel yoru pain. Marking can be *such* a tough habit to break and sometimes you just never can. The only thing you can really do is restrict all access to anything they pee on...using x-pences or little fences and such.

| The problem is that the two dogs are left in the kitchen area from 8:00 am - 5:30 pm and then again when the owners go to sleep. Gosh, that's a lot of time for two active Yorkies to be 'penned-up.' Could you find a reliable dog-walker and/or a doggie day care to help bring variety? I think it would help immeasurably if these two little guys could work off some of that notorious Yorkie energy. I'm gone 9 hrs a night, and though small, Piper has the run of the house. In addition, we go for a 1/2 hr -45 min walk (at Piper's rather quick pace) shortly after I get home. Then we do yard work or go shopping or just play on and off throughout the day 'til bedtime, then work...I recognize female compared to male, but the energy-thang is universal! You're quite wonderful to be doing so much for these silly little boys! |

| Grandma to two marking and peeing Yorkies Thanks for your response. I walk them in the middle of the day Monday thru Thursday. Even with this they still mark and pee on the furniture. They don't last longer than a 15 minute walk bc of our warmer weather now. Also, on Friday-Sunday they don't get walked bc my daughter in law is around and doesn't want me to. She die sure doesn't but honestly the dogs aren't a priority any longer. |

| Yes, I think often life happens and for some, the pups lose their priority--hard on them, I'm sure. Wonderful you're there for the little tykes...! |

YT 500 Club Member | What can I say? You are a wonderful Yorkie Grandma! Please just take the babies for yourself. It would be better for all and you will have wonderful companions. And I just bet the marking will stop.

| Thanks My son would never give them up. Also, I live in coyote, rattle snake, hawk and owl area so it's not safe for small dogs. Besides I have aging parents that I'm busy with taking to doctor appts. I will just keep working with the dogs and maybe they will stop. I even put food in the areas they mark and pee on, but they even did it in those areas. Thanks for all your help. |

| Grandma to Yorkies Thanks so much, but I'm not wonder woman.....just care a lot!! I'm dogging sitting at their house for 9 days and today I woke up and found that one of them even pooped on the floor instead of the pad. I'm going to buy some food dye and put a couple of drops in one of the dog's water, so at least I will see which is peeing and marking. I don't like blaming both of them, when it may only be one of them. Thanks! |
