| Considering a Yorkie I am considering getting a Yorkie this year and I would like some assistance. I have had several different breeds over the years - from Chihuahuas to Rotties. I prefer the smaller breeds but would like to possibly do agility with my new companion. I have a Pomeranian who is the most amazing and smart dog I have ever owned. However, the double coat is a lot of work. My main reason for a new dog is companionship. I would like to have a dog that I can bring shopping but is calm. I do suffer from anxiety and a companion would help. When I have researched Yorkies online, several sites have said they are calm, couch potatoes. Is that true? Also how to I find a reputable breeder? My pom was the produced of an "accident". My chihuahua came from a breeder but she is a wreck (even for a chihuahua) and was not socialized. I am not looking to make this decision for several months so any advise would be greatly appreciated. Thanks! |

| Yorkies are full of energy and if they have good knees are good agility dogs. Breeding has a great deal to do with the patella issues so if you are interested in agility be sure to look closely at this. Puppies are always a "mess" - it takes some age, maturity and training to calm down. Telegraphing your anxiety to a puppy can be an issue. You may want to consider a retired show dog, or a mature dog that has had some training. You can go to the Yorkshire Terrier Club of America web site and see the breeders in your area. Be sure to tell anyone you speak with that you need good patellas, if you want to do agility. My little Yorkie girl (under 4pounds) loves agility and the exercise has been good for both of us! Plus lots of fun! She has also done the 20 months of service dog school so she is very calm, but that is her job. Good luck with your search. Glad you are not in a hurry. Choose you breeder first, then your pup!!!! Can't emphasize that enough.

| Personality and training will also impact your pup! My girl absolutely loves to play and exercise, but she also loves being completely calm traveling in her car seat or my doggie purse. Terriers are usually like that from what I have seen. She was completely housebroken within a few weeks of getting her home and only goes potty outside. Mine is also just under four pounds. She has been raised in our family of six people (and one bunny) and fits in well. |

| As with most breeds, Yorkies are individuals and as such have their own unique personalities.......my little 2-1/2 pound ball of energy NEVER slows down, and is certainly not a couch potato. She is a live wire !!! I do take her with me every chance I get and she behaves very well when we are out, but at home she only stays still when she is exhausted, so, as many people will advise you, it might be better to look into getting a young mature dog that has already calmed down ( with good knees for agility performance). Whatever you decided, I wish you all the best !!! |

Furbutts = LOVE Donating Member Moderator | Like all dogs (and like us lowly humans )...they are all SO individual in their personalities...but...remember that yorkies *are* terriers, so they can be just full of all that that entails: energy, stubbornness, protective, smart, independent, sassy. But I love love love this breed - it's so fun! They are large dogs inside a small dog's body. I would say, based upon what you briefly mentioned, to stay away from super high-energy, spazzy puppies....seek one out who is a bit calmer/mellower even though they're still a puppy. You could also adopt an adult...would that work for you...? And def read all of this: http://www.yorkietalk.com/forums/gen...ent-guide.html

YT 2000 Club Donating Member | Drive is inherited and Drive is what you want in a puppy destined for agility or for that matter other performance sports. Make sure you mention to any breeder what you hope to do with your puppy. Given the inheritability it would be ideal to source a puppy from a breeder who also works with her dogs in some performance sport. While knees are very important quite frankly the whole structure of the body is key to have a happy and healthy performance dog. Hips elbows a straight topline etc. There is a stickey on here on How to Evaluate.Assess a Puppy which you might find helpfull. The AKC listing as someone else mentioned is a good starting point but so is attending shows especially those with obedience rally and or agility trials which are held concurrently. Good luck with your search.

| I'm not sure I would consider Yorkies as 'calm' as most that I know, including my own, is vibrant, alert, hyper, energetic BUT loyal, funny, intelligent etc. Good luck in your search, though, whichever breed you decide on and good luck with agility! |

| A few quick tips. Check your state for their laws about public access rights of emotional support animals. The ADA states emotional support animals do not have public access rights. Only true and trained service dogs (about 18 months to train one to public access standards) have public access rights. In some states, a service dog in training has full or limited public access rights (State Laws | Service Dog Central) especially if you are his/her trainer. I am training my daughter's service dog. I would recommend you read the disposition portions of "A Dog Who's Always Welcome" prior to picking your pup. It may help you decide which pup of a litter suits your needs.

| Stay away from Terry Castonguay of Summerfield, fl. Her website is littlebiewer yorkies.com. You can still bring it up on the internet, but it is not working right now. I bought a puppy from her on 12/21/15 ans she had parvo and died after 6 days in the hospital on 1/1/16. When I contacted the owner and advised her,she denied any responsibility and shut down her website and disconnected her phone. I joined this website to warn others. |
