| Helpppppp ivy hates her playpen Calling all who can give me some advice !!!!!! I've had ivy since Friday! She turns three months on the 15th of this month. I purchased a iris four panel pet play pen just off preference of her having more space than a kennel. I like to think of it as her little room. Anyways she hates sleeping in there alone and I've caved the first 3 nights and let her sleep in bed with me ! I Know I know !!!!! Bad move but I just wanted to make her first few nights in a new house easier. She came to me from Lakeland Florida and I'm from New York. So her play pen is in my room in a corner near my bed. She is currently screaming at the top of her lungs watching me type this lol What do I do ..... Cave and let her sleep with me Put the play pen in our living room ( which is pretty far from my room but she'll be alone ... Or buy ear plugs and hope she gets used to sleeping in her play pen in my room soon. Help - |

Furbutts = LOVE Donating Member Moderator | I would keep her in the place you have the pen now, and let her get used to it. I like my dogs in my bed, but we didn't let them sleep w/ us until they were pretty potty trained. Does she have a stuffed Momma dog toy....a toy that was the size of her Momma? That can help a bit. I'd also get a white noise machine. Hang in there...this can be a painful stage when they cry like that!

| My dogs were the same way when I got them. I know how you feel. I also caved periodically. What I did was put a blanket over their kennel at night so they did not see me. That seemed to help. I put them in the kitchen but since I live in a studio apt it felt like they were in the same room as me. It will get easier. I think the first few weeks are the toughest. I felt so guilty letting them cry. Now they sleep with me in the bed or go to my couch to relax. |

| I waited until Duchess was completely potty trained before I let her sleep with me. This is a battle definitely a battle of wills and it looks like Ivy is winning so far. Can you try putting a piece of your clothing in the expen with her? |

| Well... you can either cave in completely and let her sleep with you but I'd suggest you put pee pads close by and you'll probably have to help her up/down the bed OFTEN. OR! Hold your ground and let her get used to the pen like others said. The only thing is, since you caved before, she'll probably think if she cries long enough, you'll cave again so might take bit longer. Be patient and she'll come around. Good luck! |

| I caved the first night even though I promised myself that this one would sleep in a kennel. She cried and I put her next to my chest and she has been there ever since (6 yrs). I guess I was lucky because she never peed in the bed.

| Hello , so last night I tried to be strong and I just pulled the playpen closer to my bed to soothe her while she was upset. Long story short she figured out how to climb up and out of it onto my bed. Lol I had to give in because I neededddd sleep . I usually get up once to use the bathroom so when I did she came with and I placed her on her wee pad and she did her business also input her down one other time but she didn't need to go. She's actually doing very well with the potty training but I still would prefer if she slept in her play pen I'm gonna take all these suggestions and try it out ! She doesn't have a mommy sized stuffed animal so I'm going to get one today put my t shirt in there and hope for the best . Maybe buy some earplugs lol Last edited by Akap13x3; 12-08-2015 at 08:52 AM. |

| I'm hoping your floor is carpeted? If not, I'd suggest you put something soft of the floor in case she falls while climbing... And if things don't work out with the playpen and you end up having her sleep in your bed, I'd like to suggest a ramp or steps. |

| I've heard of this heart beat thing for puppies to put in crates to help them get used to it. Trainers use it for rescues. Hope this helps! Good luck! My puppy sleeps with me I also caved in to the crying in his playpen lol

| I used a stuffed dog with a heartbeat which my puppy would sleep on. I can't remember what it was called but it really helped. I just lost my little boy at age 7. He carried that dog all seven years and slept with it. Miss him so.

| The thing that helped a tiny bit with my chewie was making it so he was in my direct line of sight, but from the sound of it she can already see you well. I eventually gave in with my baby as well, but he ended up chewing/clawing a hole through the mesh, which resulted in me buying a plastic kennel. He seems to like this alot better, almost like it's his little doggie den. Is there a chance she would feel better in a different pen/kennel? Hope your little one lets you sleep soon!

| Based on my horrible 4 to 5 month experience... I'd suggest to keep her in her playpen somewhere close to your bed. Bring in a loud ticking clock to help her sleep. And by all means, don't cave. Depending on your little one, it may take a couple of weeks or it may take months, as it did for me. But the second you cave, you're done. So be strong!! It'll also help to have something SUPER comfy for her to sleep on in the playpen / crate. Like an old pillow that's super fluffy. Mine has an old fluffy down pillow and he LOVES it. And, get a clicker. Click and give her food/treats (whatever works) whenever she's in the playpen or goes to the comfy pillow and is quiet. This is to make sure she associates the playpen / comfy pillow is an awesome place to be when she's quiet. She'll learn pretty quickly! They're sooooo smart. But at all other times, when she's kicking and crying and screaming, just ignore her, as long as you know she's been out for a potty break already. Trust me, I know how hard it is to ignore a crying puppy, it's heart wrenching, but it's well worth it in the long run. I chose this route because my little guy is too small and I don't want him on our bed in case he gets squished (and I'm completely unconscious when I'm asleep :P). He's currently crate trained and crawls into his crate at night when he sees me crawl into my bed. It's pretty cute and awesome I still continue to give him treats to associate his down-pillow stuffed crate with awesomeness. Whenever I leave him in the morning I tell him to go to his crate before he gets his treats. He dashes in there so fast, like a lightening bolt!! haha.. Good luck!! | Our new little puppy Gracie is 14 weeks today. We are crate training her, and at bed time I have her crate raised on an ottoman right beside the bed. When I'm in bed we're basically eye to eye. I have a warm, furry blanket in her crate as well as a soft little stuffed toy for her to curl up on. This seems to give her lots of reassurance. She is being a little angel. She goes out around 10:30 pm for her last pee and doesn't make a peep all night. I take her out between 6:30 and 7:00 am in the morning. She hasn't had an accident overnight since the first night home. I think that the crate is a more confined area and it is comforting for her. She goes into her crate on her own during the day and just curls up for a little snooze, so she clearly likes it. I had an ex pen set up for her but she didn't want to be in it, so I ended up putting it away. If you're open to trying a crate, that might help your little one feel more secure. I wish you luck and hopefully things will settle down and fall into a routine very soon
