| ![]() Mars Veterinary would be as surprised as we were, when they reviewed the results of the 10 blood samples submitted by Myrna Torres. These samples had all clustered together, which is characteristic of purebred results, and so began the process that would prove and establish the Biewer Terrier as a purebred dog. This is the first time in the history of dog breeding, that a dog has been proven to be a "purebred" using the tools science has to offer. The Biewer Terrier was established as a purebred dog, using science, through the collection of genetic data, instead of the customary pedigree documentation. |

| ![]() Well, it certainly is all kind of confusing. But also very interesting. I just found out right now that my little Lacy is not even a Terrier, she is "just" a Biewer. What a surprise. lol I found the info below on the BBCA website, which kind of explains it. Biewer Terriers are registered in the United States with the BTRA. The BBIR Registry represents the Biewer. The BBIR evaluates their dogs with DNA profiles and a thorough review of their pedigrees. The chosen name acknowledges the hard work of their founders and yet separates them as their own breed. The word “Terrier” wasn’t selected because the Biewer does not share many of the behavioral characteristics of the Terrier breed. "Terrier" was never even a part of the original German name. The Terrier group of dogs has very specific traits. Wikipedia defines a terrier as “a dog … which is typically small, wiry, very active and fearless. ….They were used to control rats, rabbits, and foxes both over and under the ground.” The Biewer is a companion dog and tends to be more mild mannered than a Terrier and would never be expected to control vermin. Though the Biewer originated from the Terrier linage, the breed does not share many common Terrier traits. |

| ![]() No disrespect intended here, but for the life of me I don't know why people shell out money for pups and not know anything about them....and why breeders do not find out this information. There are so many things that breeders should do to educate people taking these pups into their homes...number one being the breed! ... then on to other things such as illnesses to look for. Giardia for one. Just seems you were so unprepared here and it is all a bit mind boggling and sad to me.

Heck, at the shelter where I volunteer one of the things I do is Adoption Counseling and we just feel it's SO important to educate educate educate and make sure the people are choosing a dog who fits their expectations. I think it's so important to find out people's expectations of pet ownership.

| ![]() I did not receive any information at all from my breeder. I got Lacy's health record and bill of sale, and that is it. I wondered why all breeders don't put together an information booklet that includes all the important info. like what to feed, how much, when next shots are due, and all the important info a new owner should know. That would help so much! When I am asked why on earth I didn't find out more about her before I bought her, it is because whether she is a Biewer or Biewer Terrier or none of those, or whether she is registered, none of that stuff matters to me, so why would I ask before I bought her? There was so much other stuff going on a the time, it was hard to keep my mind in order. I bought her for a pet, so why would I care if she is a true Biewer or even registered? I want to find out about it all now just because I am very curious. I think the Biewer background is very interesting. And like many pet owners, I would like to find out as much about my pet as I can. |

Actually, reputable breeders DO give out booklets and/or information to pet owners. And, they spend a lot of time educating people about the breed and the needs of the puppy. A good breeder will interview a person and ask them what they know about the breed...and ask the person why they are purchasing a puppy. They don't just give someone with money a puppy. ![]() You say you were just excited and there was no reason to ask questions about the breed. Maybe you didn't ask, but the MAIN question in my mind is why a breeder would not want to know what a person knew about the breed he/she was selling to. I have to ask now...why DID you purchase a Biewer if you know nothing about them? I don't want the answer to that question.....that is for you to think about! Obviously it was not because you know about the breed. Then, you go to a breeder who in my way of thinking has some questionable practices....as I said, I don't know her...but I wonder if there were red flags you missed. There is SO much information on this forum about how to find a reputable breeder. I am not going back to look at your old posts, but I swear you said you were looking for a reputable breeder?? ok..my head hurts LOL Anyway...............for now, I would forget about the history and stories about the breed and focus on the following.... If I were you, at this point I would be more concerned about making sure there is nothing else wrong with this puppy. I am seeing red flags and I don't know if you have one, or how long your health guarantee is, but I hope you have read it thoroughly and have followed through on anything you need to do on your end. I would be having blood work done ASAP including BATs....heart, hips and knees checked out...just for starters. I would spend the extra money to make sure there are no presenting health issues currently. She sold you a puppy with giardia...that did not come from the air ... it is in her kennels and it is hard to believe she does not know it. So much for the health records...exactly what was on them anyway? Probably vaccines...were they given by a vet or her? OK..I am sure others will have suggestions for you. .. maybe more than I have given.

I would never place a pup in a home assuming they went on the YHR website and read about yorkies. ![]() Not trying to bash anyone here...but seriously, IF indeed this breeder did absolutely NO education don't you agree that is a tad bit off? I only know one side, but definitely can say it sounds off to me.
