Teri - thanks for posting this thread for others to read and learn from. These wee ones in our care are indeed vulnerable in many ways, as we all have seen here time and time again, sadly. In the wrong hands/care, the tiny ones can get in real trouble and/or even die...as we've also seen here at YT.

Galen is an absolute doll and if I saw you 2 out and about, you can be sure I'd accost you like others in the public have . The only difference might be that instead of me asking you questions about Galen....you might be chasing me down the street while I have Galen in my thieving arms !

Hi everyone, I must admit that when I first started looking for a baby I was looking for a teacup. I didn't know that it wasn't a term to be used. I don't live in the united states, I live 8 hrs from our capital on a farm so I was looking for a tiny dog that I could bring with me when I travel so she did not have to be left at home because I was afraid something might happen to her while I was gone. Most of the time I travel on a bus that doesn't allow dogs, thus the need to hide her. Well I found a little baby and quickly realized that any dog that weighs only 2 or 3 lbs was way to small. I use to pray everyday that she would grow. I am one of the lucky few, my baby is a chow hound, there is nothing that she loves more than eating. I think that because she loves to eat she has grown bigger. She just turned one year old and weighs 4 1/2 lbs. I am so happy, she is a pound bigger than I thought she would be!!! I do have a question for all of you though, she just loves to Jump. She just about flies on and off our couch. She sleeps with me but my bed is high so never tries to jump off or on it, but after reading all the posts here I am wondering if I should be trying to keep her from jumping at all? Also any advice about how to go about keeping her from jumping??

I have a ramp on my couch and on my bed. It keeps the jumping to a minimum. There are ramps that go on the front or even the side up to the arm of the couch.

Teri I would also like to thank you for this post, just as a reminder to anyone looking for a small breed dog. All my fur kids have been 9 lbs and over, I flip out when I see a tiny, they are just to dam cute and I can understand why ppl want them. I have a family member that has a 3.5 lb baby and worries all the time over him, another family member has a wee one that got under foot and by accident was kicked down 5 steps breaking the front leg. Ppl that want these tiny dogs need to know the pit falls of owning one, educate themselves on the breed not just rush out and buy one not knowing what may be in store for them. It was a great and helpful post. THANK YOU, and BTW Galen is just tooo adorable.

Oh I tried everything. . . He is back to eating his Primal. And eating all his meals. He was stressed over everything that was going on with me. . Thank you

Great post Teri. Something for people to really take into consideration when looking to buy a Yorkie, because even when it is not intended one can be extra small.

Thanks the general public looks at Yorkies and thinks they are so cute. Even the larger ones like 10lbs can still get hurt or killed from accidents or sickness. I just hope that people that read the thread just does some research before getting a puppy. . Any puppy. Puppies are cute. They are all cute. But they grow up. Even the big ones need care.

Jumping is hard on their joints. Even the larger Yorkies. Best thing is to supply her with a ramp or stairs and teach her to use them instead. I am glad she loves her food.

I met a 4lb Yorkie at work the other night---too, too cute and ever-so-sweet. But for me, Piper's size (9 1/2 lbs) is perfect; she can easily hold her own with other small dogs, is big enough not to get underfoot, yet she is small enough for me to carry her whenever and for however long is necessary. As is, I "worry" about her and if she were smaller, she'd probably always be kept safely in a basket and I'd be a complete basket case...! Sighhh, I'm so blessed that my Piper is completely perfect (for me)

LOL . . I know Galen would love a playmate. . But I think he would go straight to the BRT's . . Loves to run with the big dogs.

The thing with small Yorkies YOU will be fine. U walk different you are aware of your surroundings. The dogs learn your movement. The problem is when company is there A few adults is fine but a crowd then you need to be careful. They don't know how to act around the dogs. And ime I would always worry about my dog if they were 40lbs and under. 40lbs dog they are fast enough to maybe get away...But even then a big 90lbs dog can kill it. I always watch for my dogs...
