My sis had a Toy Yorkie and she got rid of it due to it being so small even though that was the original reason why she got it.

My Izzy fell off the bottom step of her doggy stairs coming off the couch and broke her foot. At 3 pounds the bones were too small for surgery and could only be splinted until they healed. Then a year later I lost her when she had seizures that we weren't able to stop, even though she had been well controlled on medication and her phenobarbital levels were good. She was only 6 years old. The little ones will break your heart. I thought I wanted a "teacup" and was given 2 by a friend. Be careful what you wish for. My Elvis is 2.5 pounds and thinks he's a pit bull. They are wonderful little brats who have to be constantly watched.

Thanks for posting this. Super tiny dogs are adorable, but I was so happy when Lola reached 5lbs.

Her adult weight is 7.5lbs and it's amazing how many people act like she's huge for a yorkie and that her size is a fault. I just tell them I love her size, she's still very small but not as fragile. She's still fragile though and I have to work to keep her safe.

My poodles were 12lbs and there's a huge difference in the things they could do and how much less fragile they seemed than Lola. For example they could get on and off the furniture, I now know it wasn't the best for their joints, but they were fine.

We had a member here a couple of yrs ago , he was fairly new & was completely in Love with his dog. This poor man was only a member for a short time when he was standing at the kitchen sink & went to turn away from the sink & he stepped rite in the middle of his baby killing it. Needless to say he was totally & completely devastated, I have not seen him back since this terrible accident. There was another member who's baby jumped off the couch & hit it's head on the coffee table & died rite there & then. If this had been a big dog or even a 10 lb dog most likely the worst thing that would have happened is a possible hematoma but certainly not instant death. And NO yorkies are not stupid, however they all think they are much bigger then they actually are. My Jazz is just sure she's at least a Lab, lol & my Ben is quite sure that he's a Pit Bull & wants to kill any dog that's bigger then he is & has my Wolfhound believing he's the devil, lol.

i have 3, one male 14 lbs, undocked and unruly. one female 7 lbs, docked and thinks shes a princess, and the other female is expected to be about 5.5 lbs. and i couldn't dream of not letting them run and wrestle like crazy heathens. It would take away from their spirit and their spirit is the reason I fell in love with this breed. I'm careful to only go to dog parks with a separate section for small dogs. And they have bells so we know they are at our feet... and i have stairs for them to get on and off the bed. Not that they use them half the time, but I do have them. But they are dogs. And I allow them the freedom to be dogs in their own right. And they are happy. Which rates right up there with safe. But you are right to preach caution. I understand this all too well, as I lost my first baby when she managed to get stuck underneath our bed and never made a sound. We all searched and searched, inside and out. But I didnt find her until 17 hours later. And it was too late. She died in my arms. Im still haunted by that every single day.

My kids and everyone that came to my house learned early on to shuffle. No picking up your feet, because you don't know who will be under them when you put them down. LOL

One other thing we don't hear mentioned very often is to be carefull of doors. Or train your dog to wait while you walk through first. I know a couple who lost a pup when they inadvertently closed the door on him... Tragic.

One of the very first things I do. Train this.My dogs never walk before me. I always watch the doors . But I'm first everywhere. If they are going first and leading they are trying to dominate.. But its not safe for them either. PPL think its amazing how they don't dart outta the door. Yet I still don't trust them....not with their life. They are behind or heeling on my side.
