| Just one more thing. Comparing the life of your elderly relatives having accidents to purposely underweight dogs is quite nasty and disgusting. Digest that. |

| To the OP: Your dog does know it's limits. Relax and enjoy. Would you jump off a cliff? Neither would your dog. I'm sorry that you were sold an undersized dog. I understand why you feel worried. But yorkies rank in intelligence among the top 15 breeds in the world. Dogs have excellent depth perception. And you can't confine your dog everyday, just as you wouldn't confine a child, for fear of something happening. They, like a child, need to run, play, grow. You are correct to provide a watchful eye, but the issue should not be consuming you to the point that you are too scared to let your dog live life in their own home. My yorkies are bigger than yours. Could they still make stupid decisions? Absolutely. Do they? No. They are just as capable of getting hurt as yours. But they don't. |

Why is it everyone who read the OP thread understood exactly why it was posted but YOU. It was posted TO EDUCATE ppl that want tiny dogs . I saw no "bragging" of of expense then crying over tiny dog. As I see it your replies are to encourage ppl with tiny dogs to let them be dogs, let your 3 lb dog be a dog, let them run, jump, sky dive off beds, sofa. As I see it you are promoting injury to small dogs. I myself have always ended up with pups weighing 12 lbs and over, I have family that want and get tiny, I see their limitations, no one wants to see dogs with broken legs, so they protect these little ones, you say let them be dogs, break lets it's ok. That's how I see all your replies. Did you get up on the wrong side of the bed today?

| YT 2000 Club Donating Member | I too read the Op;s thread as wanting to educate and not to complain. Owners of tiny breeds and at the other end of the spectrum the very large breeds have some similar but also different responsibilities. The OP also did not state she xpenned her dogs all day. Only when necessary - a sensible precaution. Should a tiny dog get exercised daily? Of course age appropriate - and in an environment that will be as safe for the dog as possible. And dogs sometimes don't know their limits. Well at least neither of the breeds I own do. My dogs will over exercise (if I allow it) because it is something they love to do. Swim retrieve over and over again. Ready to go for a hike? Sure Mom - love to do it. I had one dog literally retrieve so much on pavement he abraded the skin off one of his paw pads. My lesson learnt. My 6lb Yorkie swims and dock jumps. But I don't want him jumping off furniture - in fact I don't want him on my furniture. Although he is allowed to be on my recliner with me. My Yorkie is crated at night for his safety - as we own 2 large breed dogs with poor night vision. Some one breaks into our home at night I don't want my Yorkie trampled as my guard dogs do their duty. And Yorkies are at risk around most dogs - as most dogs are very much larger than they are. One pick up and shake of the dogs neck from a bigger dog can seriously maim a Yorkie. Good grief I had a 3 pack of coyotes circling my large dog and myself one day when I was in a park training with my big boy. A coyote would make short work of a Yorkie! No dogs large or small should repetitively be jumping off heights that are high for them onto slippery surfaces - it quite simply is not good for their joints. Stairs are a different issue and for all breeds no stairs until at least 3 months old - there is at least one study that speaks to this. For some Yorkies with short legs and you have steep stairs - they physically may not safely do stairs! And finally there is no shame in being a show breeder - why should there be?

Galen is surround by big dogs that he plays with and bosses around. He goes outside and runs and plays. I live in an area where we have a pair of breeding Hawks, Eagles and other birds of prey that is it not safe for him to run without a harness and leash.

I posted this because I was seeing comments from people on another site. One that got a 8 week old dog. Did not know anything about the breed. I do not think ever owned a dog and the dog is having serious problems. . . I was just sharing something. Not preaching. I have been around dogs my whole life small and large. Each breed is different and you should learn about the breed before you get one. Know what you are getting into. . .

Max is a very smart boy, but jumped off a high surface once -- a table. Very lucky he didn't break a leg. I let them jump from the couch, but not anywhere else. I lift them out of the car. I keep them off of our long stairway because they would probably knock each other down running to the door. ![]() Our neighbor's Yorkie is the same size and was attacked by a hawk in his front yard. Our yard is not Yorkie friendly for a variety of reasons.

Galen is out and about all day long. His playmates most often are a Aussie/Border mix, and kitties. One is a 18lb LOL. He runs and plays with the Aussie most of the time and he ruff houses with her. He doesn't know that he is little. That is why the Wolfhound comment We do not have small dogs that live by me. He even meet a BRT which he just loved. You are so right about the wild life. I live surrounded by a farm. Which in turn brings all types of wild life. Since there is a lot of deer. Once we counted 63 in the herd. Comes the coyotes. There is a pack that runs around following the deer. So I am more cautious at my house then say at my Mom's who lives on LI.

| YT 1000 Club Member | I've never understood why some folks get riled up when it comes to how they choose to raise their pups. Will you always agree with everything the next person does? No, but just like raising a child if it's not causing any harm and your opinion wasn't asked...mind your business. |
