| collapsed trachea: keep air dry or moist? I've been reading more into collapsed trachea since my yorkie has a bad collapse in her chest area, she is young, 3 years old, and was officially diagnosed last year I've been reading so many articles by vets, some say keep the air dry as possible with a dehumidifier, and others are saying use a cool-mist humidifier to keep the air moist and easy to breath, i'm so confused and have no idea what kind of climate she should be kept in? anyone here have experience with collapsed trachea that could tell me? thanks also her breathing was so bad last summer, i'm scared its going to be worse this year, i asked my vet about having something to tranquilize her in case she has a very bad episode where she can't calm down and breathe, she has them now but with the bad ones i'm scared she is going to not snap out of it and suffocate. is my vet wrong, should i have a sedative for emergency? i've read about some people on here having that just in case |

| How was it diagnosed? My dog has a profound collapse at the thoracic level. He does better with a little humidity. We sleep with w small humidifier on, but the air in the room is cool. I add a couple of drops of eucalyptus oil into the water in the humidifier. You have to keep it very clean or it can grow mold which is bad. I have him on twice a day hycodan and he is on Temiril-P right now but is being weaned off. One thing I will say is that elevating the food bowl was the best thing I did for him, he was choking on food due to the pressure on the airway. I can show you the small little humidifier I have, I have to change the water every day but is perfect for my medium-sized bedroom. Also, taking him into steam when coughing really helps. But you can also ask your vet for medications to be kept on hand - hycodan or other cough suppressant. My vets also have offered bronchodilators but we haven't really felt that it was needed.

| They got it on an xray, she snorted like a pig when she would go for walks as a baby then the beginning of last summer her breathing was something you could hear anytime she played or exercised, i ended up having to carry her for most walks, now if she gets excited, anxious or exercises she struggles to breathe, you can watch her whole stomach move in and out with each breath.it was so scary at first. her little brother milo dosent understand they use to walk and play together all the time, they can play a bit but then she has to lay down and catch her breath. i have no idea why she has no cough or goose honk though. her bowl is in a little holder off the ground a bit. i feel like where i live in a small town our vets around here do not have much experience on it, so ive been trying to educate myself. i saw a cool mist machine at walmart and was going to get it but i thought id ask here 1st, i already have a dehumidifier. the vet put her on "collapsed trachea elixir" in december , we have to special order it from ontario, i can not find much information about it online, so ive been trying to understand what all these ingredients do, in it is: potassium iodide10mg, theopylline3mg, euphedrine0.83mg, phenobarbital0.4mg, ethanol 3.3%, isoproterenol 0.004mg, chicken syrup dose 0.1-o.2 ml/lb she's able to now go outside for a walk to the end of the driveway and around the yard on it, but i have no clue of the long term effects of all those ingredients... how long has your dog had collapsed trachea?has it gotten alot worse with age or does it stay the same? i want to try to give her a full life by managing it, the surgery sounds way too risky, the though of losing her is devastating. so i want to do everything possible to manage it and keep her comfortable. |

| My dog was first noted to have a CT at around age 2.... He is turning 15 in August. He's a little worse now than he was at 2. I walk him on a harness and make sure I'm gentle on his neck. He recently had pneumonia so sounded terrible because that affected the trachea more than usual. The elixir you're using seems to be a bronchodilator and sedative combo.

| Oh wow, 15, thats amazing, i hope meesha has a long life, i thought where she was diagnosed so young, i wasn't sure.I've had her wearing a buddy belt since she was little, nothing's ever gone around her neck,. Do you have any other tips of how you've managed it? Has he been on meds his whole life, or just the cough suppressant and hydcodan on hand for when needed? Any special foods you give him? I really appreciate being able to talk to others who have gone through this, you must be doing all the right things if hes had it since he was 2 |

| He ate home cooked food his whole life. I didn't have to start with hycodan until this year. He takes it twice a day but I can go up to four times a day if he needs it. He's pretty much a normal dog. LadyJane a member here has had many dogs with CT including her George who lived to be around 17 or so. He also had a profound collapse but wasn't diagnoses until later in life. He did well just on a small dose of steroid.
