| 5 month old Yorkie and Giardia Hello, I just became a new Yorkie owner in February. I have a lovely little girl named Peanut who is 2.4lbs as of yesterday's vet visit. Anyway, I had to give a stool sample and it came back positive with Giardia. My vet gave me a Panacur/Flagyl liquid mixture to give her for 5 days. My question is, can I mix this "compounded" mixture with wet dog food? I just gave her, her first dose (1ml syringe) and it was nearly impossible to get her to take it. She fought me every drop of the way. I know some medicines are flavored and are taken more readily, but this does not appear to be flavored as it definitely smells like medicine. I wouldn't even take it if I had to! I'm sure I can call my vet in the morning to ask, but was hoping maybe others had experience with this combo or any advice on giving liquid medication especially if I can mix with food! Many thanks from me and Peanut! |

| Hi. I'm not sure if this is your first puppy, so not sure how to help. I've had dogs that were nightmares trying to give meds, and some that just took whatever it was. The only way I could get one particular shih tzu who would go absolutely wacko crazy, was to put the syringe by where I was going to give her the medicine…Pick her up on my lap and put her face on my knees..and just the old fashioned way…super quick..with one hand I'd stick my fingers into her mouth to open while the other hand was squirting the medicine in. I never felt like mixing it with her food would guarantee that she got it all, cause if it has a smell, she could probably pick around it, or not eat at all. Maybe another idea is to try mixing with a tiny bit of applesauce and let her lick it off the spoon. I think if you just do it as quickly and no nonsense ish (new word) she will eventually tolerate it. Give a good treat once she takes it, however you get it into her |

| This medicine does not taste good. You can try and mix it with food. If that doesn't work you may have to force it down. Is the medicine in a syringe? You can put the syringe right behind their K9s and hold their mouth shut and squirt. Blow on her nose and massage her throat to get her to swallow. I know it sounds horrible but it's fast and effective. Maybe give her a super yummy special treat after to make up for it?

| Yes she is my first puppy. I mean I've grown up with dogs but my mom always did the work lol. Now it's my turn to be the mommy. It is in a syringe and I tried getting it behind her teeth in that little pouch at the back of ther mouth, but she refuses to open her mouth and I feel like I'm hurting her when I try to pry her mouth open. She's so small it's hard to get a grip on her and her little snout without hurting her or freaking her out. She's only seen the syringe once and after a few hours after I gave her meds I showed her the syringe and she sniffed at it tried to bite it and then ran away from it. So I think she knows what it is for now. It's a small 1ml syringe so it's not like it's a huge bulky thing to get in her mouth I just cannot get her to sit still or stop fighting me. Any and all advice helps so thank you soo much! I will definitely try again. 4 more days to go! |

Furbutts = LOVE Donating Member Moderator | I would put it in her food, yes, and see if that works. Keep a very close eye on the giardia as it can wreak havoc in a puppy's small intestine...you may need to get her a probiotic to repopulate the flora in her sm intestine.

| Yes, giardia is a very harmful virus. It is also very contagious. I hope your vet explained how important it is to clean every where that your pup had gone poo with a good disinfectant. If she even steps where she once went poo she can get reinfected. I haven't treated giardia in many years but I would much prefer to give a pill than liquid to a pup. Liquid is just not a very accurate way to administer medication. A pill can be broken and crushed and put in food. Many times when you put a liquid in food they still know it is there and refuse it. If you cannot find a way to give the liquid I would call the vet and ask if there is any way to get a pill that you can split and crush. |

| Thank you all! I will try to mix with food and see if I can trick her. I have cleaned everywhere she pooped, and I always wipe her butt after she goes. She only poops outside, but all of those have been picked up each and every time. I hope it clears up. He wants me to do 5 days, then take a week off then do another 5 days. |
