| Dog's nail shed like cats? No... Ever since I had Magnus, I found a nail (looks partial) in various places 2-3 times. The last time (2nd or 3rd time) was last night. I found it in my bathroom. First thing I did was check all his nails, including the dew claw. Everything checked out fine. All were even in length, firm, and when I checked all around the base of his nails and paw, no sign of pain or discomfort. So of course, I asked a friend and searched on the internet to see what I can find. To make it short, it's not normal and it could be an underlying cause to many things as something very simple as fungal infection to tumors. Definitely will take him to the vet and get checked out. Meantime, is there anyone here with similar experience? I'd love to hear any feedback. Here's some pictures I took. |

| Wow that is so weird! No dogs aren't supposed to have nails that shed like a cat.

| I used to have a min schnauzer that would lose a nail like the second picture. I'm surprised you are not seeing any signs of pain though. I could always tell it was about to happen because his toe would get very tender and painful prior to it coming off like that. Of course, this was a very long time ago, but my vet contributed it to an injury to the tissue that kept the nail from growing back strong like the others. He lived a long life with no other issues to that toe and it was only one toe that was a problem. Keep us posted what the vet says.

When I found his nail the previous time was.. maybe 1-2 years ago. Same thing. I didn't think anything of it and no problem... The bad thing is that I "researched" too much and now paranoid it might be something horrible like a tumor... I made an appt this Sunday b/c the vet I liked was working that day so I'll keep you guys posted. | |

| I have had a few of those over the years... Embarrassed to say but I neglected the nail clipping and his nails would randomly break off like that. No pain, no blood and just a little "shedding". I always thought bc he gets lots of walks outside on the pavement and a little clipping at the groomers twice a year (he's a red legged Yorkie so fine and wirey hair, slow growing) that was enough. Now that I clip them regularly, I haven't had the shedding. Was alarming at first to see but in relation to how long the nails were it wasn't all that bad. Again bad on my part |

| I was thinking about this last night. Do you still have the nail? Can you compare the shape to the nails and try to figure out which one it is? I know nails all have a similar shape, but I'm sure if you look close enough you can see some variation. Then that narrows it down to which toe.

| Ok, so I took the nail, flipped Magnus over (he wasn't too please...lol) and compared it. I think it's from his front right paw. I have to say, since they hate their nails being groomed, I don't grind/cut them as often as I should. Reading your replies and comparing the nail to his, it looks like it "shed" from the 2nd toe. I will definitely relay this to the vet on Sunday and see what she says. But for now, my mind is at little more ease since it doesn't seem to be something awful like tumor. Thank you guys!!!!! Will post follow up when I get back from the vet! |

| Hi! Just wanted to report all is well! Vet took a look at M and all his nails and she said it looks like the "top coat/shell(?)" broke off b/c the nail was too long. Other than advising me to be more diligent about cutting his nail, she said he was healthy as an ox! Thanks everyone! |

| That's good to hear. But I wonder why only some dogs' nails do that?

| Maybe just weak nails genetically. I, personally, have horrible nails. They are thin and break, tear easily. I've tried taking biotin for months on end, with no improvement. The only time I have nice looking nails is when I have fake acrylic applied, which I now only bother with at major events..close friends wedding, etc. maybe dogs are the same? Maybe some are more prone to breakage than others?

| That makes sense. Uni's hair is very thin and fragile and her hair grows slow and breaks easily. But I thought nails and hair were the same material? Strange for me, as I have strong nails that grow very fast and hardly break, but my hair is very thin and falls out a lot and doesn't grow fast.

| Will he let you just take a nail file to his nails every few days? Just sort of buff the edges, maybe? I have one that is extremly difficult to trim, so I just do that. It's not perfect, but it helps and I'm hoping that along with the regular filing and lots of peanut butter, I will someday get him to allow me to keep them in better shape. |
