I used to have a min schnauzer that would lose a nail like the second picture. I'm surprised you are not seeing any signs of pain though. I could always tell it was about to happen because his toe would get very tender and painful prior to it coming off like that. Of course, this was a very long time ago, but my vet contributed it to an injury to the tissue that kept the nail from growing back strong like the others. He lived a long life with no other issues to that toe and it was only one toe that was a problem. Keep us posted what the vet says.
