yup....this is one of the most common reason for "shedding" a toe nail. Black toenails can be daunting to clip....my best advice. "Tip" them once a month (take your clippers and clip just the tip of the toenail) if the nails are neglected and overgrown, tip them every other week until they are a more comfortable length. Our senior weenies nails are black and they were so long when we adopted her they were growing into her pads. It took me several months to get them to a comfortable length for her. When they are left to grow the quick grows longer so if you are inexperienced it is very easy to cut that quick if you just lop the whole undesired length off at once.
