Default Just got a 9-month old female and we need help!

Hello! I am new to YT. We brought Ginger home two and a half weeks ago. She is now 9 months and NOT POTTY TRAINIED. I was told that she was used to using potty pads or going outside in a covered run. So we set up an expen on our porch and put potty pads there.

I was treating her like a young puppy at first and took her out every 20 minutes. It became obvious real fast that she could hold it much longer than that. We are keeping a journal and it seems that she goes about every 1.5 to 2 hours on her pad outside. The problem is, she goes inside the house frequently...one or twice most days, and that is with four people watching her like a hawk. We have blocked off her space so she is just in the dining room or the kitchen (both rooms have wood floors). We have removed most of the area rugs. But inevitably, we do something like bring her into the bathroom or bedroom while we are getting ready, thinking she just went potty so it should be fine for just a couple minutes, and she goes potty on the carpet, floor mats, or clothes laying on the ground.

We don't scold of punish her when she has an accident. And we give her treats and lots of praise when she goes in the right spot.

I am getting worried....I know that people say Yorkies are often hard to potty train....but I am concerned that by getting a teenager that didn't have good habits in place, we will NEVER have a potty trained dog.

Is it too late to train a 9 month old yorkie? What should we do? Our lives have been completely centered around this little dog since brining her home. And while we love her to death, we want to enjoy her, relax, and not worry about her every second.

Thanks for any advice you can give me!

I got my boy at 10 months old and he was allegedly pee pad trained. however that wasn't the case and he would literally pee on the floor next to the pad. However concistency paid off and he got it pretty quickly. I would suggest leaving a pad inside for her to have access to. 9 months is still pretty young and that may help if she feels the urge to go sooner she may go right to the pad inside. Then once she's better at holding it and better trained, you can eliminate the pad. Maybe leave it right by the door? Just be patient and she will get it! It seems as though you are doing everything right. It just literally happens overnight.

If it were me, I would also make a vet visit to rule out an infection since she goes so frequently.

I would try what Kerryn915 suggests and Dayswalters, she could have an urinary infection.
As far as a 9 month old being to old, NO SO, she is still a puppy and easily trainable for not just potty training, for all sorts of training. Good luck and please keep us posted.

Magnus took about 2 weeks to potty train. Zoey.. she took over a year. It's a matter of your patience and consistency in training her. Even if she had been trained, she's in a new environment now so she might have to "re-learn" what she's been taught with the breeder. You seem to be doing a good job so unless it's a health issue, I think you just need to keep up with what you're doing.

With that said.. has Ginger been spayed yet?

As for being trained, both my dogs are house broken (well mostly, there is still a very occasional accident, but they are just that). They are house broken to my house if we go to someone's else's house, that is not their house that is outside to them and they must be carefully watched. So, the dog may have been house broken where they are and you need to start over and be patient.

Also, I agree, get her to the vet and get her checked out btw is she spayed? If not she may be getting ready to go into heat, so please get her checked.

Piper is 4 yrs old and when I first brought her home about 8 months ago, seemed like she piddled all the time; and she most assuredly was not housebroken. The vet ruled out urinary infection and since she got spayed, the non-stop piddling as virtually stopped--result of or coincidence? Anyway, Piper is not be trusted alone in the house, but is 100% better than she was...Not to worry, it'll all work out and your little one will learn. Did I mention I bought a steam cleaner--it took the pressure and frustration off of both Piper and me!

Thanks everyone! Please keep the suggestions coming! We just got her spayed three days ago. I didn't think to ask the vet to check for a UT infection. Dang!

Thanks! I'm bummed I didn't think to come here for advice before I had her spayed 3 days ago! That way I could have had her checked for a UT infection while we were already at the vet. However....she can easily go all night without an accident. Should that make me not worry as much about an infection?

Even the best potty trained dogs will have accidents in a new environment and new family. Be sure to treat and praise, once she is more bonded with you she may want to please you more and do much better with any training.

I havent read all the posts here so forgive if this is repeat. That said when i got my booat four months i was told the same thing. Itried takng him out even sat out 3hours between my husband and i. He would go in the house five minutes later. So itookto walking him and bingohe went, now ithink two things was going on one he needed to walk to help his bladder empty completely. Two he was raised at the breeders he was familiar from birth where to go withmom and siblings. Altho she never lethim out before shots. Soithastaken time and repitation for him to learn all this over. New house perhaps marking her new teritorry. Diapers helpstill that stops.

I know you said you don't scold or punish when she has an accident, so what do you do? I suggest keeping a close eye on her at all times so when she does have an accident you are able to catch her in the act. She needs to understand that it's not okay to go in the house. When you catch her going in the house you can give a quick clap of your hands and say no in a stern voice and immediately take her to the correct spot and say "go potty" (even if she's already done). Be patient, she will catch on.

She's just had major surgery so she is probably still recuperating from that and 9 months is still just a puppy. My Teddy is 15 months and everyone keeps telling me that he's still a puppy! He was trained in 2 weeks but I had him from 12 weeks. Even though I considered him 'trained', I never let him wander anywhere unsupervised and still took him to his pads every couple of hours. I think with patience and consistency you will train this baby with no problem. As others have suggested, make sure that she doesn't have any health problems and then continue to show her the proper spot to go when she needs to go. 9 months is def not too old to train - she's barely begun!
