Yorkie Talker | ![]() [QUOTE=Zook4mud;4509657]I am going to try to make this short. Our Journey began almost 2 years ago with our first Yorkie purchase from Firebrand Yorkies out of Wisconsin. Its not an easy decision since we live in NY and relied on the breeder to help us pick out the perfect puppy. Which she did. So when my husband and I decided to get a 2nd we didn't think twice and returned to Firebrand Yorkies. This puppy (Arlo) was out of the same parents as our first. We received our puppy on Friday October 3rd 2014 and he died on November 2nd 2014. How you ask?!? He had a CONGENITAL liver disease. A shunt. Nothing anyone can control.Like most breeders you are given a health agreement. Not everyone's is the same. Ours was a 2 year agreement. Offering a refund or replacement if the puppy should die from a congenital disease and an autopsy was performed. One week after we got him he was hospitalized and kept overnight for monitoring. He couldn't maintain a temp and they tested his blood for bialacid levels which were high before and after fasting. These results were an indication there was something going on with his liver and our vet recommended we see a specialist. Which we did. His diagnosis was that of a liver shunt also. With his recommendation and our vets affirmation we decided to treat it medicinally until he got bigger so we could have the surgery performed. He was only 1.67 pounds when we got him. Sadly we didn't make it to that point with him. In the meantime I had been in touch with the breeder to keep her posted on his well being. She believed it to be hypoglycemia. Feeling as though I was in a rock and a hard place listening to her or my vet I did what she asked of me also. Bought baby food and honey and syringe fed him 2x a day just to be sure so when I called her from the vet on sunday November 2nd in tears because our dog passed away I did not get the response I was expecting. She yelled and screamed at me. Telling me I killed her dog and hung up on me. 2x. Mad, sad and befuddled my husband and I opted to have the autopsy. Hoping once these results came back she might understand. Her last contact with me was a text telling me my vet and I killed her puppy and my contract was void. We chose to send him to Michigan state for the autopsy as a means of getting an "unbiased" opinion. The results confirmed our suspicions. He had a congenital liver disease which resulted in his death. I cant understand who responds like that? Not sure where to turn next I contacted Wisconsin state attorney general. With no response still from her I sent her a package (certified too) with ALL the information in it including her signed contract asking her 1 last time to end this amicably and return me the purchase price of the puppy. To this day I still have never heard from her so this is where I am left. Sharing my story. Wondering what kind of people out there have had a similar experience and why breeders wont take responsibility and honor something they signed?? Clearly I did not kill this puppy and I have the paperwork that proves it.[/QUOiTE] |

I am going to just copy/paste here the first red flag I found when I went to her website: "Here at Firebrand Yorkies, we strive to attain the utmost quality in all of our Yorkshire Terrier lines. We breed tiny, healthy yorkie puppies, many of which are Champion sired and almost all have Champion bloodlines." I didn't look any further. Do what you want, but my suggestion to you is to RUN AWAY from any breeder who advertises "tinies" and "teacups". You are asking for heartbreak. It is NOT what reputable breeders do. Read the breed standard and start looking for a breeder who breeds for that goal AND who does genetic testing on her dogs. DO NOT get caught up in the "champion bloodline" language. Just because a breeder has shown his/her pups does not make him/her a reputable breeder.

| ![]() Breeders who have any idea of what they are doing, know that they are breeding pups with a liver shunt disorder. When they continue to breed this, it is clear they are not reputable and are only after the money. In this day and age most breeders do genetic testing on both the sire and dame to stop that type of disorder. Ladyjane is correct there are no Yorkie teacup or tinies in the breed standard. If you will go to the Yorkshire Terrier Club of America website you will see the standards and a list of YTCA approved breeders. Best of luck to you with a new pup!

Yorkie Talker | ![]() I had for 16 years a HEALTHY 4 lb femake yorkue. I spent 24 hrs a day wuth her. Enough already with jusgong yotkies by size. Mine had very short kegs baby doll fsce long beautiful hair and was incredible. I had no idea that 16 years later the buying of a new yorkie was so hard. She was handpicked out of 14 yorkies..due to 9/11 and lising my husband.. I walked into American Kennel by Bloomingdales here in NYC and was handed by yorkie. She judt happened to be exceptional. I knew nothing about the breed. It was love. My grieving over my husband slowly left. I devoted my life to her. TOTALLY HEALTHY. Vets all said because of my devotion and love she lasted 16 yrs. Now I have to read about all these breeders..sick puppies.. now Im scared more than ever abd crying more. |

| ![]() There are reputable breeders. You find them through research and recommendations. I would suggest that you NOT accept a dog just because someone placed it in your arms. Not enough information there. Clearly you took very good care of your baby for 16 years! You want to see the DNA testing, recommendation.iin by their vet and talk to some others who have purchased from that person. Then you look at the health agreement. Understand they can show you any dog and say it is the parent and the DNA might be for another pup so you have to look at the reputation and that takes some time. Just having it happen easily is not how it is done.

I have learned a lot .. but, honestly would have been happy and content to not have the knowledge I have from caring for these precious babies. A 4 lb yorkie is honestly not considered super tiny. I am sure you can find a yorkie that size from a reputable breeder. As suggested by yorkiemini , read the breed standard that is on the website I am sharing below....they also have breeders listed, but STILL be careful and ask a lot of questions. The Yorkshire Terrier Club of America Just do your homework.....ask lots of questions. But, PLEASE, while looking, run from anyone who says they breed for tinies or teacups.

We used information here to find and choose a breeder from the recommended list. Quote:
Thank you ladyjane. I came here before we purchased our puppy and this is why. We used this type of info to choose the breeder. We go to pick our little girl next Saturday at 12wks old. We already have copies of the DNA testing and the genetic testing on the Sire and Dam.. We would not have known about these things had we not come to YT for info.

| ![]() I am so incredibly sorry to read about your situation. Unfortunately, your only possible means of recourse would be to file a civil lawsuit against the breeder, as she violated the terms of the contract. However, since she is located in Wisconsin, that may be where you have to file your claim? So, momentarily, that could become expensive if you have to travel there for court appearances. You could file some online complaints with the BBB, and Rip Off Report, as a means of getting her name out there, so others may think twice before doing business with her. Sadly, it is only when a problem arises, that one finds out just how truly ethical, and compassionate, some of these breeders are. I live in New York, and there is supposedly a good breeder in NJ named Claudia Pierro, and one in Woodmere, Long Island, named Pamela A. Langstein. Anyway, I wish you all the best. Quote:
