YorkieTalk Newbie! | food vs fur on yorkie poo Hi all I'm new to this. I have a 4 1/2 month old Black Yorkie Poo. I had been feeding him pedigree puppy food since he has been able to eat dry food his hair is really fragile looking. I have now weaned him over to Science Diet. I seen another dog from his litter last week and the hair on this little guy looked fantastic and he had been on Science Diet. Does food make a difference in hair? I'm thinking the pedigree didn't give him any nutrition. He's been to the vet and is healthy, his hair just looks dull and like he's going bald and the other dog has beautiful shiny hair. I could not find anything on this. He is also skinnier then the other pup(s) from this litter. I know they won't look identical as they get older but the one that I seen looked identical to him about a month ago now mine doesn't really look like he's from the same litter. |

| My daughter adopted an older yorkie in February of this year- she was overweight( she was free fed Purina select? lamb and rice) and had short, broken, crunchy hair. We transitioned her to the food I feed my two(all fish protein, no grain) and now 8 months later you would not recognize her as the same dog. Her hair is soft and shiny and even tho now 9 years old she has the body and energy of a much younger dog! Food is the only difference! Take some before and after pictures- we didn't. |

| I believe that nutrition makes a difference. There are some quality foods out there. Check out the nutrition section of the forum to see what options you have. I have fed mid-high end foods and the better quality of the food the differences in my pets include, healthier teeth, nice coat, smaller, firmer, less frequent stools. I feed Nutri Source Grain Free (Chicken Formula) this is what Emma was sent home with and I mean I love this food. Because she's a yorkie, the 5lb bag costs me about $17 but I only have to buy every 2.5-3 months.

YorkieTalk Newbie! | The last picture is when we got him, the third picture is was he looks like now he is a little dirty cause he couldn't take a bath for 2 weeks due to his neuter surgery but the picture is very true to color. I noticed he has dry skin so I switched him to oatmeal products from Petco within the last two weeks as well. Any suggestions on how to get him to eat his Science Diet food? He will not eat it wet with water I am going to pick up some wet food today and I'm hoping that works. |

| Food makes a difference. It is hard to say what you can do to make him eat. You can get some samples of different foods to see what he likes. Or you can just put the food down and leave it in hopes that he will eventually eat it when he gets hungry enough. The big concern is hypoglycemia if he doesn't eat and drink regularly like he should. You should also transition him slowly to the new food, mixing the old and the new. Put a little of the new in with the old, and then over time decrease the old food and increase the new food until fully transitioned.

| Hello and welcome to you both As with 'people', I think feeding our pups the most totally nutritious food available is probably the most important thing we can do - it shows in their hair, eyes, teeth, frame, demeanour - everything. Switching food CAN be a problem - I sprinkled a little grated parmesan cheese on Harry's and that worked for a while...then some (fresh) warmed chicken stock and that worked for a while.... - on and on it went.... In the end, he just got used to his kibble (our personal preference is Royal Canin - but you'll get loads of different opinions!! )...I wish you loads of luck with your gorgeous little boy

| i heard that food makes a big difference. My dog is just 10 weeks old but I want to start on the right path. She is eating blue buffalo for puppies and is doing good. she likes it. I heard that blue buffalo has less crappy stuff on their food, and the dog eat less and poop less. Since yorkies are small and dont tend to eat too much anyways i got. |

| I use a different kibble as treats for my dogs ( It goes in a special container on the counter, it helps prevent my husband from over treating them) When I am going to switch to a new food I act as if it is their treats for a few days- when they get a whole dish of it they go crazy! |

| Hi...your baby is a cutie pie. I would say the "you are what you eat" expression is true for our pets as well as for us. A species appropriate diet seems crucial to good health. There are many choices...one will be right for your little darling!

| I have seen first hand the difference food makes. Since I got my yorkie girl, I've switched her and my older jack russells to Wellness Core Puppy (no grain and yes the puppy formula is a bit rich for the older ones, it's actually done wonders for them and I am keeping everyone on the same food as they all kept getting into each other's food) with some occasional grain based treats or canned, but kept them mostly on stuff from Wellness. The older girls had softer and shinier fur, shed less and slimmed down (having a puppy mess with them all the time helped too), as they were overweight. We used to feed them Purina Beneful and they would have a near full bowl for about two weeks (sustaining on treats and other foods, it seems). But once I switched they ate around the old food to the new and their bowl has started to need refilling every week to every few days now. Since we noticed the change we've become full believers in a good proper diet for them and fed less "junky" food. Hard to say how my yorkie girl would've been since I started on day one, but she has the most softest fur and belly/skin out of all the dogs I've ever had XD

| Hill's science Diet is not the best food for your little one. Try this link and see if you can find a better quality food close to you. I have found that my dogs do really well on Victor. If I go higher than 4 1/2 stars, some of my guys have some gut issues. I try to keep them on a 4 star food. Dog Food Reviews by Brand |

| I don't think science diet is any better than pedigree. Find a small grain free kibble made especially for toy breeds. Corn and other fillers are usually what causes the thin hair and breakage problems. I feed raw, but sometimes they get wellness toy breed puppy.
