I have seen first hand the difference food makes. Since I got my yorkie girl, I've switched her and my older jack russells to Wellness Core Puppy (no grain and yes the puppy formula is a bit rich for the older ones, it's actually done wonders for them and I am keeping everyone on the same food as they all kept getting into each other's food) with some occasional grain based treats or canned, but kept them mostly on stuff from Wellness. The older girls had softer and shinier fur, shed less and slimmed down (having a puppy mess with them all the time helped too), as they were overweight. We used to feed them Purina Beneful and they would have a near full bowl for about two weeks (sustaining on treats and other foods, it seems). But once I switched they ate around the old food to the new and their bowl has started to need refilling every week to every few days now. Since we noticed the change we've become full believers in a good proper diet for them and fed less "junky" food. Hard to say how my yorkie girl would've been since I started on day one, but she has the most softest fur and belly/skin out of all the dogs I've ever had XD
