YT 500 Club Member | My Husband Is Losing His Patience Sammie was doing great with potty training. Now he will go every where except his pad. I just took him outside and he ran around and then ran in and peed right on my dining room rug. I picked him up and yelled no and put him outside but he thinks it is a game. I will leave the door open and he will still just run anywhere he wants and poo and pee. I am at my wits end. He can be outside for 15 minutes and then come in and quart in front of us and pee!! Suggestions please |

| Limit his access in the house. I would suggest crate training. There are a few threads on the best practices. But consistency is key. Treats and praise are good when he goes outside. Don't associate outside with play, associate it with potty time and that only until he gets it. If he doesn't go outside, back in the house in the crate, then try again a few minutes later. Schedule his food, so you can predict potty times a little better and stop water in the evening a few hours before you go to bed. Not sure how old Sammy is but small breed dogs take up to 18 months for potty training in some cases.

YT 500 Club Member | I noticed he likes rugs so I rolled up the rug under my dining room table and the rug in my living room. I know he was going on the rug in the living room because when I wake up the pad is dry and then I look under the rug and I see a pee stain all over my rug in different spots. He will pee and poo outside but then other times he will pee and poo inside too. I know we have to have patience it just with our shih tzu he was trained in a week!! Always went on the pee pee pad and even when he got older he would go to the same spot where his pee pee pad use to be. He was a saint!! This one is a devil!! LOL we still love him though!! |

| A dog that is not trained should not be given free run of the house. He needs your constant supervision until he starts to understand what you want him to do. Right now there is an obvious communication problem. One method of training is to keep him on a lead that is attached to you. That way you can learn the kind of signals he gives when he has to go and he can't go off and potty somewhere in your house. You can also take him to the same place in the yard and teach him a command such as "go potty." Say it over and over until he has completed the action. Doing this when you know he is due to go potty will help him to link the area with the action in his brain. Also taking him out for a walk will often stimulate him to go potty. The smells of other animals that he finds and the exercise will cause him to eliminate. When he does go make sure you praise him and give him a treat. If you see him sniffing the floor or circling that is a signal that he has to go. Take him out and don't come in until he has done his duty. Remember that rewarding and praise will do more to teach him than any scolding. it takes time on your part. There are no short cuts but if your give a couple of weeks to dedicated training he will learn. |

| I havent read through the other posts but this is usually the advice I give when trying to train.... Start from scratch, take out first thing every morning, after every meal, every nap and before bed as well as other random times throughout the day. Tether to you and do not give free run of the house, this is way to much space and they are bound to have an accident if you are not watching them. If they have an accident do not scold outside of saying "NO" sternly but only if caught in the act. Never scream at, hit or punish the dog. This will cause them to fear you and will usually worsen the habit making them want to hide and potty. Take the accident outside whether it be feces or urine put it where you would prefer him/her to go outside. Clean up the areas where he/she has had an accident thoroughly taking care to get all of the scent up. When your dog does potty outside like expected praise him/her like crazy, be silly and excited. They so want to please us. With some patience, praise and persistence he/she should be doing great in no time :-) |

YT Addict | Get a belt for him boo use to do that. He wanted to be walked so i did. Now he crawls up my side in the morning and licks my ear to get up and take him out. If i dont budge he goes to his daddy. Accept he covers his head up. But i get up. He goes out back but he takes his time doing it. But if he didnt go i used a belt with a pad on it. | Dinky was hard to train. It took several weeks. I did as others suggested here: I limited his access to the house. The other is I just took him out every two hours a day. He actually did not want to poo outside! Then finally, he really understood what I wanted him to do. I swear he did it for me out of love! When he did backslide, I restricted access to kitchen again, and he realized quickly what was up. Good luck. and hang in there. |

| Dogs that do not want to poo when you take them outside will respond well if you take them for a good brisk walk. The exercise gets the body systems working and the dog will naturally do the duty. This works well for peeing as well. Once they get moving they really cannot hold back what has to be released. For people who cannot walk their pets for some reason you might try a game of indoor fetch to get things moving. It may not work as quickly but it is worth a try. |

YT 500 Club Member | Thanks everyone. he is doing much better. I took up the rug in my living room and dining room and now he goes back to his pee pee pads in the kitchen. My house looks buck naked but its better than having pee pee rugs!! |
