| Determined Dash out Door Piper usually sulks underneath couch or bed when I'm preparing to leave for work, but suddenly she's taken to trying to run out the front door. She is incredibly determined and lightning fast and this new behavior is very scary for me. Today I had to block her several times (while issuing very stern "no"), and actually had my hand on her head while closing slightly open door with my foot. So then I just picked her up, telling her she had to stay home and I'd be back soon (just lunch w/co-workers), and as I edged my way out door, set her down, only to have her charge door immediately--which I closed quickly, telling Piper I loved her. Piper has learned that when I come home, if she's too close to the door, I won't come in until she "backs up" and as soon as she does so, I come in and the love fest begins. Any suggestions how I might curb Piper's determination to jet out the door (all her yorki-ness manifested itself with today's departure and lemme tell ya, it was a miracle to me that she didn't make it out!) Your insights and help will be truly and greatly appreciated! |

| I had successfully trained my boys to not dash out the door. All it took was one incident for me to put up the gates. Teddy decided one day to chase the UPS truck down the street. Training is great, but I decided I wanted to keep the boys away from the doors.

| Isn't she just a little cutie?! Those big sparkly brown eyes and little tilt of the head has me saying, "Piper honey, how come is you soooo cute?!" instead of scolding. She is my beyond (love her beyond everything). Nonetheless, misbehave she does and need to nip this door dash. Thank you for your sweet compliment--you warm my heart and make me smile! |

| A co-worker/yorkie-owner told me that I created this problem with Piper because, other than work, I take her everywhere with me, which is pretty much true; she just enjoys everything so much and is such a good and patient girl, whether trotting around a hardware store or being held in my arms for an hour's trip through Wal-Mart. I don't want to artificially deprive myself or Pipe of time together, but am I, in fact, causing this recent door-rushing problem? Thank you for your recent suggestions (i.e. baby gate) and all the support. It's wonderful to feel so connected and understood by you all! |

| Poor, innocent little Piper, AS IF she'd do that.....!!! Yes, certainly to the baby gate - but what I also did was put a strip of masking tape about 9" back behind the gate. I taught Harry to sit 'behind the line' - treats and a party every time he sat and stayed 'behind the line' - it took quite a bit of time, but it was added security (for me!). Eventually, we took the tape away - but now we still say "go behind the line" and he does!!!! Poor, confused little boy!

| Baby gate and masking tape...brilliant! I am certain it will take quite some time as Piper is selectively smart, but always stubborn, and determined, and a master at manipulating me (but ohmygosh, she's just so cute and clever and I think I don't mind too much at all)---'tis the yorkie way, is it not?! Wish me luck, cuz when it comes to her safety and my peace-of-mind, my precious Piper has met her match. Can you believe her adorable innocent routine? I'm a complete sucker for it! Thanks so much and wish me will-power and luck!! |

| What is it about these little ones that makes us love them so much. Is it their cute faces? Is it their strong personalities? Is it because they are small? I wonder.

| Cherie~I think it's those traits you mentioned, for sure. And I adore Piper's demand from me that she is always, always thee-center-of-the-universe. And that her joy in me is silly, crazy, uncontainable, and unapologetically honest. Quote:

| I would have training sessions and used a leash with mine. I would open the door and when she took off I would step on it and say wait. And then I would go out first every time. She learned to sit and wait. She never knows if I'm taking her or not until I tell her ok come or I shut door. Now that she's old she just looks at me from the couch with an "am I going" look. |

Donating YT 3000 Club Member | I would get an ex pen and use it to make a box around the door. So you can easily open and coos the door while you are also training. . . It keeps her and you safe

| Thanks for great suggestions! Since Piper knows her leash means going for a walk, I'm concerned that using it as a deterrent (although terrific idea) would confuse her. I was actually contemplating some kind of barrier-block to front door because safety is paramount, but hadn't though of the pen-idea, Ms Verbena. Guess what I'm going to be constructing, creating on my weekend?!!! The concern that you all have shown for Piper's safety and well-being touches me beyond words and my gratitude knows no bounds. I'll let you know how and what kind preventive measures work! "If you think dogs can't count, try putting three dog biscuits in your pocket and then giving your little one only two of them." |
