YorkieTalk Newbie! | new member Hello, I have posted about my Yorkie who is ill for the first time really in 14 years. She has chronic renal disease and I have all the usual vet food to encourage her to eat and stem the acidosis. She won't touch any of it. I have to give her antibiotics and that's a struggle as hiding it in food is impossible. I've tried treats, chicken, cheese, peanut butter, just about everything in my fridge. If you have any suggestions, please share. Thankyou |

| Place the pill at the back of his mouth and then hold his mouth shut until he swallows. |

YorkieTalk Newbie! | thank you, but I've tried that and she fights and bites so much it's very stressful for her. The azodyl capsule, she'll hold in her mouth and use her tongue to get it out. It's very difficult to get the pill in the back of her mouth in between nips! |

| Welcome to Yorkie Talk. I'm sorry your baby is ill. Maybe a 'pill shooter' would help? If not, I would call the vet and ask if it would be okay to crush the pill in food. Teddy hated his heartworm pill, so I warmed up a little chicken breast and put the pill in a baggy with the chicken to really get the chicken scent on it. I still had to hold his mouth closed to swallow. Hope you can find what works for your dog.

| You might also ask the vet if they can have the medicine compounded into a liquid form. |

YorkieTalk Newbie! | Phoebs Many years ago I started with liquid and it was very difficult and I was concerned about aspiration, so have since requested pills and she would always take them in chicken or cheese, just not now. |

| Unfortunately, for best results, Azodyl needs to be given whole. I agree with Maximo about the pill shooter. My Bear also hated taking his Azodyl and the pill shooter made a big difference. I would also suggest having a syringe full of water to wash it down after getting the pill in her mouth. Good luck.

| You might try a thin layer of butter on the pill to make it slippery, open her mouth, put it on the back of her tongue and then gently give it a little push until it is past the point of no return. Occasionally I have had to resort to this method when I have a little one who simply won't cooperate at pill time. |

| I had great luck using a cream cheese (Laughing Cow or Philadelphia) to hide the pill. I also used MediCal brand (gastrointestinal?) canned food (purchased from our vet) and made tiny little meatballs with the pills hidden inside. All my dogs went crazy for it, especially our little Yorkie Sprite. Good luck!

| We had a similar problem with our last girl and did two things. One was to crush the pill to a powder and mix it with a little water, and inject the solution with a syringe into her mouth. The other option is to check with your vet about a local pharmacy that will compound the medication into a solution form, although that can be a bit expensive. |

YorkieTalk Newbie! | Phoebs thank you all for your suggestions. She exerts so much energy fighting the pills and biting that it's not as easy as it used to be when she was younger--I could even brush her teeth once a week--no more! She doesn't go crazy for anything right now tho she did gnaw on a greenie. I have fluids I will do tonight subq and hopefully this will make her feel better and she'll eat and take the azodyl. She does act interested in the kitchen or whatever I have on my plate but when it gets close to her mouth she just turns away or spits it out. She's lost another 6 ounces in a week! The acidosis is very taxing. |

| Something else to consider is, renal failure can make then nauseous. Maybe that's why she doesn't want to eat. I would talk to your vet about putting her on something. I made a Zantac suspension for Bear per my vet's instructions and gave that to him twice daily. Famotidine also is a good option. It made a huge difference in how much Bear ate.
