I paid 600 for Baxter 5 weeks ago here in Iowa. I went on how healthy he was and disposition, and looks. He is absolutly too cute has a great bite and lovely hair, is blue and gold and Akc registered. I think it is all in what a person wants. I just wanted a good friendly smart funny cute well behaved puppy. Thats what I got, well, the well behaved part most of the time. He still gets those little devil horns sometimes Oh Baxter also came with health warranty and everything.

I would never advise to choose price over health, but I know that since the cost of living varies so much from one area of the country to the next, that that affects the cost of yorkies. I imagine vet bills and the cost of supplies are more expensive in areas such as CA, so that drives up the cost of buying a yorkie puppy. I want new members to see that if they look outside of their area that there are affordable puppies available.

Default Cost of yorkies - Difficulty finding a good breeder

I am glad you brought this topic up. I have been searching for a male yorkie puppy and I see a wide range of prices. I am most concerned that the puppy is as healthy as possible and exhibits the basic features of the breed. It is so confusing. Some of the dogs that cost more money are not being bred by experienced breeders or have champion bloodlines so it doesn't really make sense to me that they cost more. I don't know what to do! If anyone knows of a good breeder in North/Central Florida with reasonably priced healthy yorkies please contact me.

Thanks!
Lisa

I am almost embarassed to post. I KNOW I was taken and went ahead anyway.

My Ginger that passed this summer was 15 yrs. I paid $350. for her and thought that was SOOOOOOOOO much $$ back then.

When I searched for Mari, I wanted a tiny. The ones that specialize in tinies see you coming. I paid $2500. Shame on me. I knew it was way too much but I fell in love. I liked the breeder. I spent time in her home. Now, however I would do more searching.

My husband is pissed! Mostly because she has definate flaws. Her tail is docked too short. Her legs are too long, her hair isn't what it should be but let me tell you she IS a lovie and I love her. When my husband makes note on 'those legs' I just reply that 'we paid extra for those long legs!' I swear she looks like a jack rabbit running! It makes me just laugh makes him go He's just way to critical!

That's a cute story! I paid $800 for Zoe when she was almost 5 mths. The girl wanted $1800, because that's what she had paid! I told her that $800 was my limit since Zoe was already 5 mths, and had NO prior training. She was already 6 lbs at that age, so I knew she was going to be really big too, so I thought $800 was fair. NO way would I have paid $1800.... at that time. Anyways, she sold Zoe to a family, who promptly returned her because she was so un-trained and big and they realized she wasn't what they were looking for. So, the girl called me and said she would take the $800!!! And now I have my little ZoZo. Now that I know my little girl.... I think $1800 would have been a fair price... she is AMAZING! I love her dearly

I sure have a story about when we got Sweetie. Four years ago my husband saw an add in the "IWANNA" for a female yorkie, 6 mos. old, 2.5 lbs - $600. He called and found the people had purchased her from a breeder and when they took her to the vet they told them she was too small to breed - so they were selling her. We met them at a McDonalds and we ended up trading a German Rueger rifle for her. Got the papers and called her breeder - she had been sold 3 weeks earlier at 3.5 lbs. and with the promise that they wouldn't breed her. She had lost a pound in 3 weeks - we suspect they kept her in a crate except to feed her (from their conversations). We had her spayed and she is now a healthy 6.2 lbs. If we had known she would be such a nice size we wouldn't have had her spayed. While we knew what to look for in a yorkie (teeth, straight back, etc.) we really lucked out getting such a fine pet.

Can you imagine if the police had pulled up at McDonalds on a rainy Tuesday night and we were showing guns in the back of our Honda hatchback?

In general yorkie puppies run around $1200 here now.

(http://www.yorkietalk.com/forums/sho...926#post368926) I think that this has to do with the poster's location because prices are generally higher in his or her area. I hate to see people coming here and seeing posts that say yorkies are only priced really expenisively because I know many of our members have gotten yorkies for less than $1,000. I would hate for someone to see this and think this breed is out of his or her financial reach. So, if you have purchased your yorkie for $1,000 or less, please share this, and if possible from where you bought the yorkie. I want members who come here to see that there is a possibility of owning this breed without spending thousands of dollars.

Thanks!

(For me personally, the first yorkie I seriously looked at was $850 and was from Ohio)

I have two male Yorkies. Riley was priced at about $1000 with AKC papers. We told the breeder that we were not interested in registering him and we purchased him for $750. This breeder was in PA. TJ was about $700 in NE Ohio.

CentralNewYorki, you said that you looked at a Yorkie in Ohio for $850. Would you mind PMing me with where the breeder was located? I live in Ohio and am interested in getting another Yorkie, a female this time. I am having trouble finding a breeder near me with females for a price in my range. Thank you very much in advance.

I only paid $400 for Gracie. Her father is AKC registered and her mom is UKC, so the breeder initially told me that I couldn't get papers for her and that's why she was so inexpensive. Later I found out that I could get papers for her through APR and CKC.

When you call and ask questions the breeders know nothing about the breed or have them advertised as Teacup, toy and standard. Many have never been to the vet and have no health warranty at all.

I had a person call me over the holidays she bought a puppy out of the paper right before Christmas and it died on New Years day. Went thru all the do's and don'ts. She is buying another puppy out of the paper because her family can't wait. She would have been better off to have paid more for that healty baby that had a health warranty. Instead she has the cost of purchasing two puppies and the $1,000.00 that she stated she paid in medical for the dead puppy. Some people never learn. That cheap puppy is not always cheap- may have numerouse health problems and may not be the quality that you are looking for.
I can't agree with you more!!!!!

I have to agree with some here. I think that the advertised prices are set based on 2 main factors: 1) the 'going rate' in the area, which for what I can tell seems to be different depending on the area of the country you live in, and 2) the costs incurred by the breeder. I have no clue if breeders profit or not, really, I couldn't care less nor do I know or care what it cost for each individual breeder to raise a litter of pups. I would assume that since no two breeding practices are the same, no two set of costs would be the same? It would seem only right though that a breeder charge an amount that will at least keep them "in the green" when possible, otherwise, it is like you are paying others to get one of your puppies.

If you really want the best representation of the breed and the best chance of getting a healthy dog go to a Reputable Experienced breeder. (see the Breeder Talk area and the subject about breeder types) To find this type of breeder go to the YTCA website and contact some of the breeders on their list. This type of breeder is not into it for the money so they don't have many litter available, you may have to get on a waiting list. If I were you I would contact them and ask if they know of anyone with puppies available.

good luck
