| Worried about Piper Upon returning from work this morning, Piper's greeting was punctuated with what I'd call wheezing (goose-like sound) and a little choking/gagging. But she went through her usual antics, outside to bury bone, bouncy let's go for a walk, etc. I've made an apt for her for Tues, but am wondering if anyone knows what might be going on with my girl..? I am prone to getting panicky over Piper; deep love and all. She's sleeping at my side as I submit this. Thank you. |

I ♥ Joey & Ralphie! Donating Member | Does Piper have a short nose? My Ralphie does this, I believe it may be reverse sneezing, sometimes it really scares me, but vet said it isn't harmful. If she's doing it when you return, she's overexcited, and you have to change your habits when you come home. Are you the type the makes a big fuss when you see her, I am, and this is the worse thing you can do. They say to ignore them for a few minutes, go about your business and then after 10 minutes you can greet them. I could never hold out for ten minutes, but I found that giving them a quick kiss on the stairs, and then allowing Joey to run over to the bed for another kiss keeps the wheezing and excitement to a minimum.

| Scooter does that a lot. It doesn't always happen when he's excited but does happen when he's just lying down. It is scary to hear but he always seems just fine after an "episode".

| It might be reverse sneezing. Mine has jags of this too and it scares the heck out of me, even though I know it isn't anything particularly serious. The next time you go to the vet mention it and see if they rule out trachea issues. If so, the culprit is most likely reverse sneezing. Quote:

YT 500 Club Member | Go to you tube and put in reverse sneeze and see if it sounds like that. With a reverse sneeze usually there stomach will go in and out and it lasts a few minutes. I have a puppy that sometimes will do a real quick cough gag after drinking. Could he have kennel Cough? |

| My Gina made a goose like honk when she had kennel cough. Zoey makes a coughing noise that sounds like a trachea problem but it goes away after a few minutes. It always makes me freak out. Seeing the vet is a good idea.

| I've read that it's completely normal for yorkies to sound like that sometimes. They have what's called a pharyngeal gag reflex. It has to do with the air going through their nose very fast so it sound exactly like a reverse sneeze which makes them also sound like a goose it's usually over within minutes. |

| Have you had a lot of rain in your part of Nevada recently? My boys have had brief bouts of sneezing/almost gagging like from nasal throat drip after some rainy periods. They have also done this after inhaling things in the house (Teddy had a piece of rice up his nose). I hope Piper is back to herself soon. A vet visit is a good idea if it doesn't go away.

| Is it any wonder I think the world if you all...?! The 'noises' stopped last night and Piper seems fine. We went for a 45 minute, Piper-paced (quick) walk and no wheezing, gagging, nothing but normal panting. Thank you for your helpful and calming advice...I don't know if Piper's little beak is long or short--it seems to sit on her face just right! But I think you're onto something with that bit of info. She does get outa control excited upon my return so I'll try to be a bit more subdued upon re-entry. And yes, we have had rain recently in Nevada. Piper is up-to-date on shots, et al...And I'll listen to the YouTube video for comparison, but the description sounds like what I told my vet. Thank you everyone for your quick and reassuring responses--simply cannot tell you how very much it means to me to know I have wonderful, wise, supportive resources/people at my fingertips! |

YT 2000 Club Member | dog Just a word of caution about any bones or treats you give your dogs. There are a lot of bones out there that can choke a dog. They bite off a big piece and it get lodged in their throat. Be very careful what you give them and watch when they chew. Avoid the choking. I heard the greenies were not good but I do not feed these so I do not know. |
