Does Piper have a short nose? My Ralphie does this, I believe it may be reverse sneezing, sometimes it really scares me, but vet said it isn't harmful. If she's doing it when you return, she's overexcited, and you have to change your habits when you come home. Are you the type the makes a big fuss when you see her, I am, and this is the worse thing you can do. They say to ignore them for a few minutes, go about your business and then after 10 minutes you can greet them. I could never hold out for ten minutes, but I found that giving them a quick kiss on the stairs, and then allowing Joey to run over to the bed for another kiss keeps the wheezing and excitement to a minimum.
